Charlie Hunnam to Play Christian Grey in FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

by     Posted 364 days ago

Rather than announce the casting of both leads in Sam Taylor-Johnson‘s Fifty Shades of Grey at the same time, Universal Pictures has decided to break up the announcements but release them within the same hour.  Author E.L. James said on her Twitter that Dakota Johnson (Ben and Kate) will be playing the female lead of college student Anastasia Steele, and now James tweets that Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) has the role of Steele’s lover, business magnate Christian Grey.  While I wish Universal had just made both announcements at the same time, at least we don’t have to play the casting sweepstakes for the lead male role.

Hit the jump for the press release.  Fifty Shades of Grey opens August 1, 2014.

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, September 2, 2013 — Charlie Hunnam will star as Christian Grey, the lead male character in Universal Pictures and Focus Features’ highly anticipated film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” it was announced today.  He joins Dakota Johnson, who will star opposite him as Anastasia Steele.  The film, which will be released by Focus Features on August 1, 2014 in North America, is being directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti alongside E L James, the author of the #1 bestselling book on which the film is based.  The screenplay is by Kelly Marcel.  The announcement about Mr. Hunnam’s casting in Fifty Shades of Grey was made today by Ms. James.

Mr. Hunnam currently stars as a regular on the critically acclaimed FX series Sons of Anarchy.  His feature film credits include Pacific Rim, Children of Men, Cold Mountain, and Nicholas Nickleby.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in 50 languages worldwide since its release.  To date, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest-selling book series ever.

Universal and Focus acquired the rights to the three books in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy in March 2012.  Focus Features will market and distribute the first film in partnership with Universal.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele.  Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed,” explore the couple’s deepening relationship.  For more information please see the official Fifty Shades of Grey Facebook page.

I really doubt your audience cares about this news collider; maybe the folks over at Entertainment Weekly, just not us. But I know you have to do your job and post this since this is technically movie news. So.

Hunnum had such potential to be in pretty great things. And now he’s squandering it.

I’m sorry but Charlie Hunnam is not a good actor. He pulls it off in sons of anarchy but by the skin of his teeth. He manages to hold in enough feminine lisps to sound mainly and straight enough to be the head of biker gang. In pacific rim, he was very unconvincing, it was fine because the film went for a comic and light take. He is just too cheesy to take seriously. He even walks like a comic book thug in the mid 90s.l. Or a cool penguin…

love Charlie Hunnam, and though for the past handful of years he’s played a gruff meat head, he could easily transition himself back to his pretty boy days.

Especially Children of Men and Cold Mountain.

But he was in those, Kota was saying he had potential to be in great things. As in he passed up other opportunities.

Landing 50 Shades of Grey is a great move for his career. Yes, we think it’s stupid. But it puts him front and center with the female demographic. And that’s going to play a huge part in future roles he takes.
