To some, the biggest news to come out of E3 2015 had to do with a game that’s 18 years old. Yes, it’s finally happening, a contemporary remake of the Square (now Square Enix) game Final Fantasy VII is in the works! The game developer announced the news during Sony’s presentation at the expo and released a teaser trailer confirming the game’s (eventual) availability on the PS4. It also tells viewers to “Play it first on Playstation,” suggesting that the remake will eventually be available on multiple platforms.
But enough from me. Check out the chill-inducing trailer for the Final Fantasy VII remake below:
Final Fantasy VII is but one of many trailers coming out of E3 2015. We’ve put together over 20 of the best for you here, and set aside the Star Wars games trailers here. If you want more Final Fantasy VII news, here’s the press release from Square Enix:
LOS ANGELES (June 15, 2015) – At Sony Computer Entertainment of America LLC’s (SCEA) E3 press conference today, SQUARE ENIX® announced that it has begun production on the full remake of FINAL FANTASY® VII for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system.
Leading the development will be key members from the original project, including producer Yoshinori Kitase, director Tetsuya Nomura and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima.
Now the bittersweet news is that the elation experienced upon viewing that trailer is tempered by the announcement that Square Enix has just begun production, meaning it’s going to be quite some time before this game hits shelves. Just how long is anyone’s guess, but maybe it’ll be ready by the game’s 20th anniversary in 2017? The Playstation 4 should certainly still be a relevant gaming system by then, likely being in the middle of its lifetime as platforms go (unless something massive like Oculus Rift and its virtual reality competitors come along to topple it in the meantime). Regardless, my money will be set aside for the day the remade Final Fantasy VII arrives. What about you?
