I’ve been on the fence about getting Final Fantasy XV for a while. I don’t think there’s been a good mainline Final Fantasy game since 2001’s Final Fantasy X, but Square-Enix has been hard at work on XV for ten years (it started out as a PlayStation 3 title, Final Fantasy Versus XIII), and in a couple weeks it will finally hit stores. Fans will finally get to see if the game has been worth the wait.

Square-Enix, trying to promote the game, may have made a bit of an error putting it in the hands of Conan O’Brien for his “Clueless Gamer” segment. Presumably, they knew O’Brien would make a few jokes at the expense of their game, but I doubt they expected him to absolutely trash it with guest co-host Elijah Wood. Perhaps they thought he would give it some light ridicule while exposing the game to an audience that may not be traditionally interested in JRPGs. And perhaps they’re still thinking, “All publicity is good publicity,” but I know for me, it’s turned Final Fantasy XV from a game I want to purchase on its release date to one where I’ll wait for the bargain bin (if I get it at all). Seriously, they force you to push your car to a gas station. There’s a battle that takes 72 hours of real time to finish. Who thought these were good ideas?
