The first image of Saoirse Ronan in Hanna has come online. The thriller re-teams Ronan with her Atonement director Joe Wright. The film has her playing the title character, a perfect assassin trained by her ex-CIA agent father (Eric Bana) in rural Finland. You can’t really blame him. What else is there to do in rural Finland but raise your daughter to be a killing machine?
Last week, we saw the first set images from the film featuring Bana and Cate Blanchett who plays an “icy intelligence operative” overseeing Hanna’s mission. Hit the jump to see the new image from USA Today. Hanna is due out next year.
Here’s the synopsis of the film, although it says the character’s from Sweden, not Finland. Whatever. It’s a cold place in Europe.*
Hanna is a teenage girl. Uniquely, she has the strength, the stamina, and the smarts of a solider; these come from being raised by her father, an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Sweden. Living a life unlike any other teenager, her upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own. As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.
*And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you offend all your Swedish and Finnish readers in a few sentences.

One has to be an imbecile to mix Finland and Sweden with each other, and leer about it so openly. Yes, both countries are cold in winter, but so is Canada, and Scandinavia has four seasons, anyway. Ignorance is bliss, I presume? HANNA looks to be an excellent movie, which could be even better than LEON. Fingers crossed.
Over the years, lots of people have talked about a sequel to Leon (aka The Professional), where the Natalie Portman character followed his footsteps and became an assassin. This sounds a bit like the same idea, worked around a little. Heel Tastic

This is the juciest role for Ronan. She is such pure class! With her talent, and this cast, Hanna will be awesome!
