USA Today has just posted the first photo of Mickey Rourke as “Iron Man 2” baddie Whiplash. After getting the word “Zardoz” out of my skull (older gentlemen with orange lower garments is where that thought came from), I thought…not bad. I’m not exactly sure how threatened Tony Stark is going to be when he’s face to face with a lo-rent version of his own suit, but I like the aesthetic of the design and how director Jon Favreau notes that the similiarity plays into the core theme of the film (the theme: Remember “Zardoz”).
Of course the “Whiplash” comes from the off-screen whips the character is wielding and Rourke noting that he’s going to “light them up”. As for the character’s relationship in the comics to weapons designer Justin Hammer (played in the film by Sam Rockwell), Favreau notes, “We like to play into and against the expectations that people might have so, we mixed it up a bit.”
Check out the full photo after the jump. “Iron Man 2” hits theatres on May 7, 2010.
