USA Today has just posted the first photo of Mickey Rourke as “Iron Man 2″ baddie Whiplash. After getting the word “Zardoz” out of my skull (older gentlemen with orange lower garments is where that thought came from), I thought…not bad. I’m not exactly sure how threatened Tony Stark is going to be when he’s face to face with a lo-rent version of his own suit, but I like the aesthetic of the design and how director Jon Favreau notes that the similiarity plays into the core theme of the film (the theme: Remember “Zardoz”).
Of course the “Whiplash” comes from the off-screen whips the character is wielding and Rourke noting that he’s going to “light them up”. As for the character’s relationship in the comics to weapons designer Justin Hammer (played in the film by Sam Rockwell), Favreau notes, “We like to play into and against the expectations that people might have so, we mixed it up a bit.”
Check out the full photo after the jump. “Iron Man 2″ hits theatres on May 7, 2010.

I like where this escalation theme is going in these Iron Man films. Maybe feeling that he(Stark) is responsible for the rise in villains will drive him to drinking more.

I wonder if ol' Mickey gets whupped in this Mad-Maxesque-pirate-convict outfit, then turns to Justin Hammer for an upgrade… Certainly would explain why this image is being released so far in advance of the release date….and the unlikelihood that this thing is going to take down a more experienced Stark in probably upgraded Iron-Man armor.

Would it be possible for somebody to hose this man down and maybe cut his hair? He always looks filthy, like he’s been sleeping in an alley. He’s not easy on the eyes, that guy. He needs to cut back on the Nick Nolte factor.
