As we explained early today, you cannot easily dismiss Michael Cera.  And if you did, he’ll come at you with a katana.  That’s on fire.  That’s what we see in the first official image from Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World who posted the image via his twitter feed.  While we have seen a photo of an image of the cast, this is taken straight from the movie.  If my memory serves me correctly, I believe this is from the film’s final battle, and you can see Jason Schwartzman dressed in white in the background.  Schwartzman plays Gideon, the big bad of the League of Evil Exes who Scott (Cera) must defeat in order to win the heart of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who is the lovely lass with the blue hair standing next to Gideon.

Hit the jump to see the full image (HIT IT, goddamn you), the official version of the previously released photo/image, and the official synopsis.  There’s currently no official release date yet for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but early indicators point to a late August release.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World:

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass–and now is back in town–to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past–from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over

I've never read the books and amazon now have them out of print, no doubt they will be getting re-printed with new jacket art before the film.

However, based on what I have read and the few images I've seen, this is going to kick-ass. Oh and Kick-Ass will also kick-ass.

For me, this is easily my most anticipated film of the year. I LOVE the Scott Pilgrim books and with Edgar Wright at the helm, I am confident the interpretation of the volumes will be done justice on the big screen. Great young cast too (Michael looks amazing in that kung fu brawl shot !)
