There’s no use in being exasperated or bemoaning Hollywood’s lack of creativity so I’ll just say that today Columbia Pictures released the first trailer for the remake of The Karate Kid starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.  You already know the plot: Kid moves to new city, tries to fit in, meets cute girl, gets beat up by dickish martial arts student, learns karate from wise, unassuming instructor, and goes on to be the best, forever, and no one’s ever gonna bring him down.  I’ve included the trailer for the remake and the original after the jump so you can enjoy the comparison.  Sadly, neither trailer features the immortal line, “Sweep the leg.”

The Karate Kid hits theaters on June 11, 2010.

why the token name “karate”? the movie is filmed in china, where the martial arts are known as WUSHU (or KUNG FU in the west). but not karate ;) I guess it’s all about the reference to the original, but still… it doesn’t need to be called the same, it is enough that it is already copying all the plot’s main elements. Anyway, glad to see some wushu moves making it into the silver screen.

OMG! With Chan on board I thought it may at least look quite good on its own merits. BUT, that was painful!!! I would love to see Chan make a better sequel to Shanghai Noon (underrated!) And then retire from “Hollywood” films.

And I’m not a fan of Will Smith, and now it looks like his kid is a clone of his personality! Daaayymm!!!!

I have little interest, the interest I do have is Chan playing a role where he’s not smiling a lot or being goofy. And from the trailer it appears Chan is a bit grittier and dirtyer then we’ve seen him in some time, so I look forward to that, but this does scream “rental” at best.
