The first week of guests for The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (that’s weird to say) have been unveiled. South African comedian Trevor Noah landed the coveted gig following Jon Stewart’s retirement from the series, and he looks to be setting a tone the first week that signals what kind of Daily Show this will be. Kevin Hart is the first guest, followed by Bumble founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe on Tuesday, Republican Presidential Candidate Chris Christie on Wednesday, and musician/Taylor Swift cover artist Ryan Adams on Thursday.
It’s a nice eclectic mix of culturally relevant and potentially thought-provoking, and I’m especially curious to see Noah’s demeanor during the interview with Christie. Stewart was always quite fun with the celebrity guests, but when it came time to have politicians on the show, he asked tough questions that resulted in some of the best late night television interviews in history.
Suffice it to say, Noah has massive shoes to fill, and speaking with Rolling Stone he says he and his team of writers are actually planning the first week of shows like a miniseries:
“The first episode will be a reintroduction of the show — but you can't just go off one episode like, Oh I know what this is about, I know what this is ... So what we're doing is dividing the first week into a four-part mini-series that will set the tone for what we hope the show will be.”
Indeed, Noah will no doubt take some time to settle into the chair, but familiar Daily Show faces are still involved behind the scenes. In the official credits for the series, Noah serves as writer/executive producer alongside Stewart’s longtime EPs Adam Lowitt and Steve Bodow, with Daily Show scribe Zhubin Parang being promoted to Head Writer.
How will this all shake out? No idea, but I can’t wait to tune in and see Noah’s spin on this iconic establishment that Stewart molded and shaped into one of the most incisive late night programs in history. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah premieres on Comedy Central on September 28th.
