After Superman/Batman Movie in 2015, Warner Bros. Planning FLASH in 2016 and JUSTICE LEAGUE in 2017

justice-league-slice-1

Warner Bros. has been developing a superhero team-up movie to match Marvel’s Avengers success with their DC characters for some time now, but the plans keep stalling.  WB has finally found a way in, and is ready to announce their gameplan at Comic-Con today.  After Man of Steel, Superman and Batman are both established at the box office, so it makes sense to follow Man of Steel with a Superman/Batman team-up in 2015 as reported earlier today.  But wait, there’s more!  Heat Vision adds that the studio is planning a Flash movie in 2016 and finally getting to Justice League in 2017.

That is all the detail we have at the moment, but this is an exciting time to be a DC fan.  Check back soon for our full recap of the Warner Bros. Comic-Con panel.  Hit the jump for a tired Marvel/DC comparison.

justice-league-comic-coverI don’t think it’s always fair to compare WB/DC to the lightning in a bottle that Marvel captured.  But I like the parallels here in terms of establishing characters leading up to the group movie:

  • Batman/Iron Man – Massive box office success, the franchise flagship.
  • Superman/Thor – One step down in terms of box office, but proves there are at least two heroes who can draw a big audience.
  • Flash/Captain America – The last step with a relatively untested character before the group movie drops next summer—finger’s crossed it doesn’t flop!
  • Green Lantern/Hulk – Didn’t catch on in individual movie(s).  This is the perfect chance for rehabilitation as a supporting character.
  • Wonder Woman/Black Widow – Hey look, a woman!  It’s unfortunate that Wonder Woman is an afterthought—I hope it is not too much to assume she makes it into Justice League.
  • Aquaman/Hawkeye – If Justice League wants to hypnotize one hero for half the movie, it’s Aquaman.

I am all out of comparisons for Green Arrow, Hawkman, Martian Manhunter, or whoever else could appear in Justice League, but I welcome your input in the comments.

This at least sounds more realistic than all previous plans.

  • Pat Kolp

    Finally!

  • LEM

I guarantee they’re trying to persuade Bale to return. I think they could actually have it start out with Levitt playing Batman and being killed with Superman somehow being involved or blamed which may draw Bruce Wayne back out of guilt.

    • Pat Kolp

Interesting theory, but Bale has stated he will not return. Unless WB is willing to back up a truck of money like Marvel is doing for RDJ, i highly doubt it.

      • Random Bystander

RDJ wouldn’t come back for A2 until his co-stars got more money, not him. I think Bale would only come back if Nolan said he should.

      • Werefon

Ohhhh! It so sweet that you really think that RDJ wouldn’t comeback because of salaries of other actors))
Aha, also because his contract ended and he wanted more money for A2 and A3! You know right that he got paid $ 50 mil just for the Avengers and God knows how much he demanded ?

      • Pat Kolp

No, he is right. RDJ did say he wanted all the others to get paid more then what they made in there solo movies. i forgot to mention that in my post, so thank you for bringing that up. but he did also want more money because he knows how successful A2+3 will be box office wise.

      • Werefon

It was just a Hollywood bullshit story! He didn’t say it personally! It was just stated by one website at first that this is the reason! Never ever believed in that! Listen if other actors wanted more money their agents would demand that, not RDJ! And if they will not raise paycheck they all could leave! Marvel can replace one actor but the whole cast? Nope. Universe is already established and they just can’t replace them all when Fase 2 is already running! And Obviously if actors wanted more money they would just make it happen with their representatives and they don’t need RDJ to that!

RDJ just played harsh with his fans and demanded big paycheck to return! And he knew that fans will fill all the media with demand of DJ to return! He basically used fan base to buzz up his price and never told to any cbm or movie fans that he will try to return and make it happen to make people happy(just to look like a nice guy and not because he really thinks that

      • Lex Walker

He only made that much for Avengers though because he was willing to bet on the big Avengers box office grosses by taking a percentage for the bulk of his paycheck. Then again, the man helped kick off the MCU, so if anyone deserved to make that particular deal in their contract, it was him. Marvel probably didn’t even think it’d get that far until Iron Man became a runaway success.

      • Pat Kolp

        Exactly.

      • SMB

The perfect casting for this Justice League Batman is Karl Urban , (Dread, Star Trek). He can pull off Bruce Wayne and Batman. And he’s loved by the fans.

    • Steve Rudzinski

Snyder, Goyer, and every WB exec in every interview (on websites and on tv and EVERYWHERE) have super officially stated countless times that Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is in its own universe.

The DC Movie-verse will have a new (probably more comic accurate) Batman that will better fit into the universe of Meta-heroes. This is official, it has been stated by every official source possible.

It would be stupid to bring back Bale.

      • Lex Walker

And frankly while Nolan’s Batman-verse has it’s place, I’m excited to see the more freakish/fantastical side of Batman’s rogues come out to play. A Joker that’s more than just a scheming psychopath, that actually works in some of that Mark Hamill sadistic glee, or even the flavor John DiMaggio’s given him. Or Poison Ivy done right, or Clayface. The chances for the next wave of Batman films to be more outlandish but still excellent is exciting.

      • Pat Kolp

        Or…Black Mask+Deathstroke in a film together….

      • Lex Walker

Heck yeah, though if I’m being honest, unless Arkham Origins fails to continue the Batman gaming streak, I’m not sure if a movie will ever be able to do a Batman story nearly as well as the games (especially when they carry over so many voice actors from the Timmverse). The movies are welcome to take really awesome shots though.

      • Pat Kolp

Yeah the games have been amazing. Im just happy that Deathstoke is at least on green arrow.

      • Lex Walker

Arrow’s one of those pleasant surprises where I feared the worst after Smallville became a mess, but at every turn Arrow keeps things fast and avoids the biggest pitfalls (so far). I still think it’d be amazing if DC has the foresight to build up Arrow enough so Amell can join the Justice League cast when the film finally gets made. It’d make it seem like they beat Marvel to the movie-TV integration punch (even if they didn’t intend to).

      • Pat Kolp

Yeah. and it doesnt hurt that Ammell is trying to get on the justice league movie. Id love to see Arrow in it. He is awesome in the justice league shows.

      • Pat Kolp

Honestly, i wasnt to thrilled with arrow with the first 3 or 4 episodes. But i was excited that after that episode it picked up and never looked back.

      • Lex Walker

Yeah, it took them a few episodes to realize the right pace. Amell would be a good fit, that’d be a nice surprise.

      • Pat Kolp

Yeah, although it doesnt follow the comics all to well. But it is indeed a good show. And i can’t wait until season 2. i was so pissed when they had that mid-season break. And not to mention the Season finally was freaking amazing.

      • Lex Walker

That’s true, if Amell wants to be considered for the gig, Arrow can’t do anything too serious to any of the bigger DC characters filling out its cast. Though so far they’ve been treating Deathstroke with a great arc, and they haven’t done anything else too serious on the larger JL-canon front.

      • Pat Kolp

Yeah. Although they said no Meta-Humans will be in it, it’ll be interesting to see season 2 and see what happens from now on.

      • Pat Kolp

And i wonder when they will have Deathstroke actually be a enemy in the T.V show. It’s been said that Slade will be in season two.

      • Lex Walker

Slade becoming his enemy would be a good second season finale and make for an action-packed third season.

      • Pat Kolp

That would be pretty awesome. i hope they can somehow bring in Hal Jordan.

      • Lex Walker

GA can work pretty well without meta-humans, especially since he doesn’t quite have Bruce Wayne’s huge arsenal or any superpowers. Pitting him against meta-humans would actually require the audience to suspend an extra dose of disbelief if he’s going to survive that every week without help. As long as the writers can come up with three or four long-term arcs that span the first 3-4 seasons, I don’t care if they never have meta-humans. A well-developed Slade/Deathstroke vendetta would be enough to fill out half a season by itself once then knock down that domino.

      • Pat Kolp

Totally agree.. what i would like to see, which i doubt they will do is have the GL introduce somehow..

      • Random Bystander

That is exactly how I explained this to a friend less than a week ago, even that Smallville “became a mess”.

  • Heisenberg

Written and directed by Michael Bay.

Please please please do The Flash justice!!!! I was waiting so long for a GL movie and it was so forgettable. Make The Flash something special.

    • Pat Kolp

Just have Goyer write all the movies! lol jk..

  • Josh Gobin

I think Bradley Cooper should play the Flash.

The Dark Knight Rises came out exactly one year ago today. Sooooo I applaud WB for waiting exactly one whole year to get back to work on milking the Batman tit again. That shows real maturity on the studios behalf. Or whatever….

    • Werefon

Or they were just busy with MoS and waited Box Office and Audience reaction! Well, it worked and now they can do another Batman and I hope it isn’t Army Hammereddick his performance as Boring Ranger proved that he can wear cool outfit And have a jawline but with all that being stupid ass anoying bitch that you want to shot!

    • Garet Jax

      Why shouldn’t they???

There’s obviously money to be made and a lot of people are screaming for it. So why not? Not really understanding how maturity factors into this brilliant business decision.

People love Batman. It’s a great move.

  • Doug_101

At least this will help us avoid seeing ANOTHER Batman origin film. Actually kind of excited about this. Curious to see who they cast as Batman. Bale won’t come back because I’m sure he doesn’t want to get sucked into the whole Justice League thing.

    • C-Man

We have only seen ONE origin film for Batman. It’s the other guys that have been through it more than once.

      • Doug_101

You could classify 1989′s Batman as an origin movie, though, yes, in the strictest sense of the word, Batman Begins is the only one that really tells how he gets started. What I’m getting at is that we’ll avoid another Amazing Spider-Man situation where we’re getting another start-up film not long after the last.

      • Professor Bill

They did a few origin flashbacks in the first Michael Keaton Batman

  • diles1

I like the comparison here, but it did make me notice that while Marvel has made megabucks off of the CInematic Universe, the potential should or could be much greater for DC. Comparing the last three Batman films to the last three Iron Man films (though Iron Man 3 does have the unfair advantage of being an Avengers sequel), it is clear that Batman is still the biggest box office draw (along with Raimi’s Spiderman) despite the handicap of leading off from Batman & Robin. And, of course, Batman has the best rogues gallery of all.

    Batman: $396m average
    Iron Man: $346m average

Moreover, Man of Steel and Superman Returns performed significantly better than Thor, especially when adjusting for inflation. This should be obvious, of course, because both Supes and Bats are the highest tier superhero. The Hulk and Green Lantern had their misfires, but it seems to me that Marvel ran with the ball after Iron Man, something that Warner and DC have simply been reluctant to do until now.

In terms of quality (not popularity), we can only hope.

My first instinct is that I sort of hate the idea of a new Batman continuity beginning as a team-up with Superman. But who knows. Hopefully they’ll surprise me.

  • Pat Kolp

Honestly, if they do the Justice League right, i think it can be better then The Avengers.

  • Jason

So no Wonder Woman movie? When are we ever going to get a legit, standalone female superhero movie? Did that Halle Berry Catwoman thing put them permanently off the idea of a female superhero movie?

    • Professor Bill

People are too unfamiliar with wonder woman. everyone knows superman and batman, and that’s why people flocked to see them. even in the super friends she was bore background character, not enough people would get excited about her, it has noting to do with gender. even though, she only existed to settle down the feminists of the forties and compliment superman.

Man of Steel, despite it’s larger budget, in terms of profit (not accounting for inflation), has eclipsed Iron Man 1 and 2 worldwide — who knows if Iron Man 3 would have done what it did without the Avengers …. Likewise, who knows what Avengers would have done without Iron Man. :)
