First Trailer, Image and Poster for Robert Zemeckis’ FLIGHT Starring Denzel Washington

     June 6, 2012

The first trailer has landed for director Robert Zemeckis’ Flight.  Starring Denzel Washington as a heroic commercial airline pilot who miraculously lands a disabled jet, Flight goes deeper by delving into the real reasons behind the near-catastrophe.  The trailer does a nice job at highlighting the cast, which includes the always-charismatic Washington alongside John Goodman, Don Cheadle, James Badge Dale, Melissa Leo and Bruce Greenwood.  It also attempts to take what is initially a fairly thin inciting incident in John Gatins’ (Real Steel) screenplay and expand it to more of a human interest story.  You’ll have to decided for yourself whether the trailer gets you interested or not.  Flight opens November 2nd of this year.  Hit the jump to see the trailer along with the first image and poster for the movie.

I felt that the premise of Flight was a bit thin when it was first announced and this trailer hasn’t done much to change my mind.  Washington and Zemeckis are great, the assembled cast is more than capable, but there’s not enough meat here to get me interested.  Let us know how you feel in the comments below.  You can also check out the first image of Washingon in his pilot’s getup below, along with the first poster from the film.

Here’s the synopsis for Flight:

In this action-packed mystery thriller, Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, a seasoned airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board. After the crash, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault, and what really happened on that plane?

Only Denzel and Bruce Greenwood make this look good. If they weren’t in it, it’d be crap. However since they are in it I think it looks good.

Well I don’t know why you say it doesn’t get you, but it totally looks awesome. I can’t wait. Washington is the greatest and Zemeckis is always great.

    Yes, please.

Thank goodness for the occasional character driven story. Good to have you back, Zemeckis.

WHOA….. i haven’t even seen the trailer yet, and i’m fucking excited… Robert Zemeckis first live action movie since What Lies Beneath!!

  • mattinacan

looks good, but the whole rolling the plane is ridiculous, what did he land it upside down?

  • Anon

Yeah the MEAT, as you call it, is supposed to be all of the character stuff finishing off with the heart warming courtroom scene where Denzel wins the case.

Nobody does plane crashes like Zemeckis. Cast Away still occasionally haunts me. Agreed, the premise is a bit wild. Almost makes you wonder if Denzel died in the crash and is going through some sort of purgatory. Whether it was just a crazy impossible landing or something else, this probably has my money.

    That mocap looks awesome.

Looks like its based somewhat on United flight 232 and its crash back in 89, in Iowa.

Hey buddy, that’s what I thought! I remember seeing a TV doc about that flight a few years back. I remember the show made it seem like the captain was the sole hero, but the Wikipedia article about United Flight 232 credits the whole crew for keeping their cool. Regardless, the most fascinating thing I recall from that appears to be in this script–that others afterward were unable in simulators to reproduce the crews’ lifesaving technique.

Finally! Zemeckis knows how to evoke tension, I swear. I thought this was going to be campy, but it looks dark and jaded.

Actually looks really good – love Washington in almost everything, but this looks like a step beyond the normal plane-crash drama. More like Accidental Hero but not played for laughs. Reminds me a little of Courage Under Fire. More “after” less “during”.

Have to disagree with you there, Dave. That trailer looked awesome!! And it’s not just Denzel and Greenwood who look like great characters- Cheadle and Goodman look like they’re gonna be chewing up some scenes as well!

Great elements. Will definitely see it. Go Zemeckis, go.

Looks fantastic. I’m so sick of the same tired music/songs being played in trailers, however.
