FORREST GUMP to be Re-Released in IMAX on September 5th

     June 5, 2014

Earlier today we shared the news that Ghostbusters would be making a theatrical re-release later this summer to celebrate its 30th anniversary.  Now we have word that Paramount is re-releasing Robert Zemeckis’ Forrest Gump, in IMAX no less, for its own 20th anniversary.  Now, I love the multiple Oscar-winning film just as much as the next guy, but do we really need to see Tom Hanks sitting on his IMAX-sized bench holding the world’s largest box of chocolates?  Paramount thinks so, apparently.  For my money, it works just as well if not better on the living room television with the family gathered around.  No word on if a 20th anniversary collector’s edition or any other memorabilia is in the works.  Hit the jump to watch the original trailer if you’re so inclined.

News of the IMAX re-release of Forrest Gump comes courtesy of Exhibitor Relations.  Here’s the original trailer for Forrest Gump:

  • Person

Yes, now we need other 90s classics re-released in IMAX. Silence of the Lambs? Fargo? American Beauty? These scream for IMAX…

    • Neo Racer

      Yes that and reboots!!!!!

  • Kyle

Driving Miss Daisy . . . in IMAX!

  • Ross

i find imax more exciting for films like forrest gump in 2d, rather than transformers and superhero movies in 3d

  • Neo Racer

Hollywood is inventing a new serum that makes you completely forget an old movie, so it’ll be like seeing it for the first time-allll overr agaiiinnn!

    • Lex Walker

Not gonna lie, I’d take that serum willingly a couple of times if it meant getting to experience a few films for the first time.

    • BigJimSlade

Anything to help me recover from whatever serum I took that makes most modern movies forgotten by the time I’m done watching them. I would love to be able to rewatch classic films for the first time again…

  • JCubs79

This is one of the last movies I’d ever want to see in IMAX.

If you think FORREST GUMP is some fluffy, feel-good movie then read Drew McWeeny’s devastating deconstruction of it and realise the entire world fell for the con:

After reading that page (not just the Gump section), McWeeny has become a much better and more mature writer today at HitFix.

I don’t know about Hanks and his box of chocolates, but I’ll pay good money to see Robin Wright singing nude in IMAX
