Roland Emmerich’s adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi trilogy Foundation just got some fresh blood. Deadline reports that Dante Harper has come aboard to write the latest draft of the screenplay, after Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) penned the first draft. Asimov’s series takes place at a time when humans are scattered on planets all over the universe, living under the rule of the galactic empire. When a psycho-historian who has the power to see the future foretells that the empire will come under collapse very soon, he sets out to ensure that the knowledge of mankind isn’t wiped out. Emmerich previously talked about the challenge of adapting such a sprawling mythology back in 2009, and at the time said he was waiting on Rodat’s script. Apparently he now feels the material needs another go.

Though he hasn’t yet seen the release of one of his projects, Harper is a bit of a hot commodity at the moment. His calling card was the Timothy McVeigh biopic Dreamland for Brad Pitt’s Plan B. He also wrote the script for Black Hole, which David Fincher was going to direct, and did a rewrite on the fairy tale update Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters which opens next March. His next film likely to go into production is Doug Liman’s super cool-sounding All You Need is Kill, which is currently casting. Emmerich’s next directorial effort after the release of Anonymous will be the sci-fi flick Singularity, which he told Steve will probably start filming in March.

i think this production benefits from the relative absence of asimov geeks compared to geeks of other IPs. who will rise up to protect the foundation series from the destruction that hollywood will wreak? as someone for whom all of asimov’s science fiction was tremendously influential, i dread this. though i do hope that it will encourage younger sci-fi readers who have never heard of asimov to pick up the books.

This will never happen. The first book takes place over 150 years, between four or five main characters, and the entire point of it and every other Foundation story typically hinges on the Foundation surviving wars by doing absolutely nothing. The later books at least have a main villain, but still… we’re talking major-as-hell sprawl. Not to mention that the brand couldn’t be super valuable, and this would be a majorly expensive movie(s). If Dune can’t get a fresh greenlight, no way this thing will ever take off.

I thought this project had died! Bummer…

It’s been said countless times before, but Foundation can most likely only work as a mini-series, or a full fledged series.

Asimov’s Foundation can’t be adapted for cinema. The pacing is too slow. Nothing really exciting happens in the first 200 pages of the book.
    It will be a snorefest.

Damn ! I didn’t even know a ‘Foundation’ adaptation was in the works, and now Emmerich is at the helm.I hope it’s decent, even though I doubt Emmerich can ever rise above mediocrity.

I really hope this never gets made. Just dont see how hollywood could make a good movie out of any of the 3 books except maybe the second. This really needs to be done as a mini series.
