After fighting the Friday time slot death sentence with a powerful promo featuring a quote from yours truly, it looks like Fringe has cheated death for at least one more season. EW noticed a Twitter update from executive producer J.H. Wyman saying “Fringe was picked up!!!! Thanks Fringedom!” The network has since confirmed the fourth season renewal and as a huge fan of this supernatural series I couldn’t be happier. I know there had been rumblings that the series was on the bubble thanks to lower ratings, but apparently those numbers are even better than what the series was pulling down in the fall. Once again, I’m completely stoked to see where Fringe goes in its fourth season. How about you? [Update: Fox has sent out an press release announcing the show's renewal. You can check out the press release after the jump.]
FOX RENEWS “FRINGE” FOR FOURTH SEASON – IN BOTH UNIVERSES
FOX has renewed critically acclaimed thrilling drama FRINGE for a fourth season, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.
“FRINGE has truly hit a creative stride and has distinguished itself as one of television’s most original programs. The series’ ingenious producers, amazingly talented cast and crew, as well as some of the most passionate and loyal fans on the planet, made this fourth-season pickup possible,” said Reilly. “When we moved the show to Fridays, we asked the fans to follow and they did. We’re thrilled to bring it back for another full season and keep it part of the FOX family.”
FRINGE co-creator and executive producer J.J. Abrams said, “We could not be happier that the fans of FRINGE (and our most excellent partners at FOX) have allowed us to continue telling stories from the fringe for another season!”
“This early pickup comes at a perfect time as we start production on the Season Three finale,” added FRINGE showrunners and executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman. “We join the cast and crew in thanking our loyal fans and FOX for allowing us to have this much fun telling stories we love.”
Since moving to Fridays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) in January, FRINGE is averaging a 2.2/7 among Adults 18-49 and has established itself as Friday’s No. 1 series in the core adult demographic.
The compelling third season continues tonight, Friday, March 25 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), on FOX. In the “Bloodline” episode, the intensity of life “over there” accelerates as a pregnant OLIVIA (Anna Torv) is kidnapped and finds herself in mortal danger. As the Fringe Division races against time to find her, agent LINCOLN LEE (guest star Seth Gabel) receives some heartbreaking news as WALTER (John Noble) stops at nothing to preserve the new branch of the Bishop family tree.
Created by J.J. Abrams & Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci, FRINGE is produced by Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Jeff Pinkner, J.H. Wyman and Joe Chappelle serve as executive producers, while Kurtzman, Orci and Akiva Goldsman are consulting producers. Additionally, Pinkner and Wyman serve as the series’ showrunners. YES!
Best news of the day! I freakin’ love Fringe.
Great! I’m very happy about that. One of the few shows I like anymore.
My year has officially been made! Thank you Fox!
Yes!!!!!!
This is really phenomenal news! It doesn’t make up for Firefly and Terminator: SCC, but it is a definite step in the right direction. I just hope that the Fringe crew go forward with the knowledge that another miracle renewal is exceedingly unlikely, and take steps to create a great resolution to the show at the end of this season.
Great News! This is one of the most consistantly good shows on TV. I look forward to the next season!
at least one more season? huh
It got renewed for a FULL season of 22 episodes. FOX is happy with Fringe ratings. I can see it go for 5 or 6 even.
Actually think FOX is gonna stick Fringe to mondays again after House with this 22 episode order
I agree as well…. anybody want some liquorish sticks?!
Fringe has gotten better, but it’s still kind of a low budget X-files. I miss all the great locations of that series–you really felt you were out in the middle of nowhere, and that isolation factored into the plot lines, too. Fringe doesn’t have anything like that.
This is fantastic news. Now it’s time for FOX to stop fucking around and give them a huge, heavily-promoted season premiere during November sweeps after the World Series.
For them to make this work effectively, they’ll have to do a “mini-reboot” to introduce new audiences to the show. That’s just fine with me, because this writing room has proved time and time again that they damn well know what they’re doing.
Yes, I am so happy that they renewed this show. FOX seems to get that a Friday time slot is tough on any show. This is great news.
When will it end, though? I love the show now, but… the storyline is very much full of finality. lol. Whatever the idea is for Season 4, it would have to be something amazing storywise to really have the same pull over an entirely new season after that. I’m even skeptical of Season 4, honestly.
Still, I’m glad to see that Friday didn’t kill it.
As for the previous “low budget” X-Files comment. Huh? I’m betting Fringe has 5x the budget that X-Files had, especially in the first few seasons. I do understand what you’re saying about the locations, although Fringe has gone out into isolation a few times with great success. It’s hard to pull off in modern shows– you know smart phones, internet everywhere, that type of thing.
YES!!!!
This has been a great week for two shows I love. First, Futurama gets renewed. Now Fringe! I would be even happier, if Fox should renew Lie to Me.
Thank you FOX!!! I love Fringe….it’s the best show on TV right now.
While I haven’t gotten around to watching Fringe, I’m glad FOX finally pulled their head out of their ass and gave what seems to me a pretty cool show another season. Now if they only could of done that with Firely…ah well
DUDE! SPOILER ALERT THAT STUFF LOL! I am catching up (season 2) and am really excited that it is continueing so i can watch it real time.. but i had no clue she was preggers
So there is some intelligent life at Fox after all.
The “tragedy” with American television in general is that shows that require the viewer to think or actually listen, e.g., shows with intelligent dialogue or that are not part of the accepted formula, e.g., “The Good Guys” (too witty?) or “Pushing Daisies” tend to be cancelled.
For some reason, American dramas have to have a “body count” or meaningless and sometimes endless action that does little to advance the plot. I guess it also must be cheaper to include absurd chases and aerial shots, instead of hiring and paying writers capable of writing meaningful dialogue.
And does “Reality TV” really appeal to people with an IQ over 100? The shows are pandering to the lowest common denominator, or those twisted individuals who derive great pleasure from the misfortunes of others.
The rest of the English-speaking world can produce intelligent television without the gratuitous violence predomonant in American television.
“MI-5″ is far superior to 24. As much as I liked 24, the sad reality is that there was probably more violence and a higher body count in one episode of 24 than in the entire MI-5 series to date.
How any of my neighbours to the south know that everywhere else in the world MI-5 is broadcast with its original title, “Spooks”. For most of the English-speaking peoples of the world, “spook” means either spy or a ghost; it apparently means something else in the USA.
