Disney Changes Release Dates for FRANKENWEENIE and JOHN CARTER OF MARS

     January 19, 2011

Disney has altered the release dates for its 2012 3D tentpole projects, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Andrew Stanton’s (WALL-EJohn Carter of Mars adaptation.  According to an Exhibitor Relations Facebook update, Burton’s stop-motion remake of his 1984 live-action short, Frankenweenie, (which was recently slated for a March 9th release) is now set to hit 3D theaters on October 5th of the same year.  As for John Carter of Mars, the project originally held a release date of June 8th, 2012 but has now been bumped up to fill Frankenweenie‘s previously held March 9th release.

As a reminder, Frankenweenie will star the voice talents of Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Catherine O’Hara, and Martin Short.  John Carter of Mars will feature a solid cast that includes Mark Strong, Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Haden Church, Polly Walker, and Taylor Kitsch.

Hopefully this means we will get a trailer sooner than we thought, although we’ll probably have to wait til summer(comic-con?) to see it.
June 8th seems like the perfect date for 20th Century Fox to release ‘The Wolverine’, they should take advantage of this.
As for the now date clash between Prometheus and John Carter, no way will there be two huge sci-fi epics released on the same day, regardless of if their audiences are different.
My guess is Prometheus will be moved, hopefully to somewhere in April/August/September/October, those months hardly have any films releasing
