Most of us became familiar with CW Seed through the character Vixen, who appeared there first in animated form before coming to Arrow in a live-action version (played by Megalyn E.K.), and then moving to Legends of Tomorrow (though with a different actress, Maisie Richardson-Sellers). Today at the TCA Press Tour, CW President Mark Pedowitz confirmed that CW Seed will continue to act as a kind of “farm team” (my words) for the live-action universe, and that its next series will be called Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

Who is The Ray? We’re digging pretty deep into DC lore here with the Berlanti-verse’s latest. According to the CW,

Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.

Ray Terrill first appeared in Justice League of America #107 in 1973, and whose powers, as mentioned above, focus on light manipulation and energy blasts. Also, The Ray will be introducing the first gay superhero to lead a show, continuing The CW’s push for diversity.

The series comes from Arrow-verse creators Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, and we'll bring you more information about its premiere, voice cast, and more as it's announced. For now, it seems like The Ray is being developed to follow Vixen in making the jump to live-action (while also primarily remaining in the animated realm)
