Summer 2013 reached its pinnacle in July: closing as the second-most lucrative month of all time behind July 2011. Of course, after you reach the top, there is nowhere to go but down so.. welcome to August!

On the first Friday of summer’s final month, 2 Guns was the clear winner. The action comedy earned an estimated $10 million from 3,025 locations, including $1.27 million from Thursday night previews. Universal was expecting 2 Guns to hit $23 million through Sunday (about what White House Down earned for its June debut) but it looks like the R-rated release is aiming now for a debut of $28 million or higher. The weekend’s second new title actually caught the tail end of July. On Wednesday, Smurfs 2 opened in first place with $5.2 million from 3,866 locations. Based on Friday’s estimate, Smurfs 2 is expected to earn $18 million through Sunday, or about half of what The Smurfs realized in its first weekend back in July 2011.  We’ll have full details on this weekend’s box office tomorrow.
