I stayed silent on the box-office potential of James Cameron’s game-changing 3D release Avatar despite great temptation. If you are old enough to remember those “Titanic-Watch” columns from twelve years ago, you’ll understand my hesitation. History and word of mouth favored a huge opening for Avatar; but December can also be a tricky month to launch a blockbuster. And so I kept my mouth shut until there were solid numbers to report. Here they are: Avatar launched at midnight Friday on 2,000 3D and IMAX 3D locations where it grossed $3.5 million. The estimates for all of December 18th put the film at $27 million from its 3,452 theatres. That’s good enough for third on the all-time December opening list. Bad weather is likely to keep Saturday figures lower than expected, which means that the film may not reach its projected 3 day take of $80 million. But for anyone who is disappointed that Avatar did not demolish the box office right out of the gate, know this: this movie is going to be a BIG player well into January. Plus, it’s always a mistake to bet against James Cameron. More on Avatar plus full weekend coverage tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Avatar $27,000,000 $27
2 The Princess & the Frog $3,400,000 $35.9
3 The Blind Side $3,200,000 $157.9
4 Did You Hear About the Morgans? $2,300,000 $2.3
5 New Moon $1,400,000 $271.6

You’re darn right this movie is going to be a BIG player well into January. I saw it at its first day opening, and I was completely rapt in every aspect. I plan to see it at least one more time in 3D. For some of my reasons why you can’t check out my Avatar movie review: http://tinyurl.com/ylxzlc9

I love how nobody will admit what a bomb this movie is. 27 mil opening night and it opened right before X-Mas? That’s terrible for a movie that cost half a billion to make. New Moon made 72 mil by comparison.

Avatar’s first day stands as the third highest-grossing ever for a December release. It slots behind The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’s $34.5 million and I Am Legend’s $30.1 million. Not bad for non-sequel movie I think …

27 is pretty good for a movie that didn’t come out in during the summer.

Oh JaySin, if only jumping to conclusions produced accurate conclusions, the world’s problems would be solved in an instant. Lets look at movies through JaySin’s eyes. Titanic must be a flop b/c it only made $28 million the entire first weekend. New Moon must be a bigger financial success than Dark Knight because it made more money the first day, even though it will be lucky to come within $200 million of DK domestic total. Spiderman’s first day $39 million must also make it a failure. The reality is the first day numbers only indicate one thing, what history has shown, sequels and adaptions usually make more money than original works during the first few days of release b/c there is a built in fan base and people know what to expect. Maybe we should wait a few weeks before calling Avatar a flop, because if Avatar puts up consistent number for weeks to come and has some legs the $27 million opening day gross will be an afterthought and the film as a whole will clearly not be a flop.
