Avatar continues to astound, earning $9.1 million on Friday to maintain its throne atop the box office. The film has reached $525.9 million, and will surpass The Dark Night as the #2 movie of all time by the end of today. New release Legion opened to a respectable $6.7 million, while The Book of Eli hung tight on its second Friday with $4.9 million, revealing a strong market out there for the biblical apocalyptic genre. The Tooth Fairy, starring The Rock in his latest family film, earned a mediocre $3.5 million, and The Lovely Bones rounded out the top five with $2.6 million. Check back tomorrow for weekend estimates and a full report.

I was finally one of the people to go and see it this weekend lol, so instead of most movies where I contribute to it in opening weekend I contributed to this one to gain its 6th week at #1. Due to being flat-broke for the last 3 months.
I liked AVATAR as much as the next guy. I can also appreciate all the hard work that went into it. Having said that, it's a little sad to see it top THE DARK KNIGHT. TDK is 100x better. And, in my opinion it's the best film of the Decade.
You're lway behind, Avatar has already passed The Dark Knight, which is sitting at #5. Avatar is actually close to passing Titanic to take the #1 spot. James Cameron is the only Director to have two $1 Billion dollar movies.
Collider actually reported last week that the question was not will it pass Titanic but how soon will it pass it.
Allm0st he is talking about the domestic top list which The Dark Knight is #2 at (Avatar hasn't beat it yet but is closing on it), Avatar is currently #2 in the worldwide box office so once it passes The Dark Knight in domestic it will be #2 in both domestic and worldwide box office and need about 200 million in domestic and 200 worldwide to hit #2 in both box offices.
excuse me, to hit #1 in both box offices (beating Titanic for both spots, alternatively it can earn just 200 million in the domestic to hit #1 for both but it'll basically have to make another $400 million total to pass in both box offices).
Sorry, my language is a little unclear, but I was referencing domestic grosses. Before today, Avatar was still a bit behind The Dark Knight in total domestic gross ($533 million).
But you're right, Avatar is already ahead of The Dark Knight worldwide, and will soon pass Titanic.
You said “all time” so it lead me to think you meant world wide so it was confusing. Sorry for not thinking and jumping to it so soon. Thanks for the explanation as well.
Its all cool I thought the same thing for a second, or at least noticed the lack of clarity. I rationalized it and said he meant 'all time' domestic. :]
I'm just waiting for Avatar to pass Titanic and hit 2 billion, that is the real only unattainable goal atm (possibly), its already pre-determined to pass The Dark Knight.
The way it's looking should pass sometime in about two weeks or less most likely.
Well I don't think they've released date for this weeks actual sales yet (not including friday), but for sure on Monday we can say when about it will pass Titanic and once it does that we can probably estimate/determine if it will indeed pass the 2 billion mark which I think its got a good chance of doing so but it could slow to a halt around 1.9 billion
From the friday numbers it looks like its slowing down I mean by next weekend it might only be pulling in 15-20 million and a couple weekends more it will be below 10 million, so maybe another 2-5 weeks in its current wide release?
I guess it only needs 100 million more to pass Titanic in both domestic/worldwide box office so yeah probably next 1-2 weeks for worldwide and 3 weeks for domestic.
I was 100 million too high, my data was a bit old didn't realize it had gone that far up.
Yeah it's still going strong, which surprises me I half expected Book of Eli and Legion to edge over the competition of Avatar considering almost 2 months of dominating the box office. But now I think we wont see it knocked down until about Iron Man 2 it may slow down but I mean out of top 5.
Could be wrong but still wouldn't mind seeing it again myself to be honest.
I think this is its last week at #1, either When In Rome or Edge of Darkness (starring Mel Gibson) will overtake it. Possibly both. It will probably be #3 next weekend. I knew Legion would be a flop, it looks like crap and I was surprised that The Book of Eli did so well since the movie got terrible reviews (which is sad for Denzel). I was also disappointed with The Lovely Bones I haven't seen it yet but I had high hopes for it since it is a lovely book (some pun intended).
It might not leave top 5 box office until the weekend of feb. 12 when 3 new movies are coming out that have a good shot at it. If Edge of Darkness and When In Rome don't dethrone it then it could possible be welcome to another 2 weeks at #1 but I see that as being very unlikely considering the good press that Edge of Darkness has had.
Avatar is break all records in Movie history and don't think that any movie compare with it.all actress does very hard work and make this movie all time favorite movie. The Dark Knight is also good but i don't think that it gave any competition to Avatar.
