Friday Box Office: GRAVITY Launches with Big $17.5 Million; RUNNER RUNNER Off To a Slow Start

by     Posted 1 year, 75 days ago

gravity-sandra-bullock-sliceAfter what has proved a disappointing year for the sci-fi genre, Gravity is on pace for a surprisingly robust debut. The Warner Bros. thriller earned an estimated $17.5 million from 3,575 locations on Friday (including $1.4 million from Thursday late-night screenings) and is now targeting a three-day total of $48 million or higher. Initial projections for director Alfonso Cuaron’s feature were closer to $35 million, but with stellar reviews (98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and a heavy presence in 3D and IMAX venues, it’s easy to see why the film’s prospects improved so dramatically. At this point, both George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are looking at new career-high openings with Gravity, and the film itself is poised to become one of October’s highest debuts of all-time.

The weekend forecast was not so sanguine for Runner Runner.  Fox’s R-rated thriller earned an estimated $2.75 million from 3,026 locations on Friday and is expected to fall short of $8 million this weekend.  We’ll have complete details and the top ten tomorrow.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Gravity $17,525,000 $17.5
2.  Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 $4,700,000 $43.7
3.  Runner Runner $2,750,000 $2.7
4.  Prisoners $1,730,000 $43.9
5.  Rush $1,400,000 $15.1

Gravity is fantastic. It’s easy to quibble about some of the dialogue, because there is nothing else to quibble about. I am happy to see a movie like this getting embraced by audiences. IMAX 3D is key. And sit in a seat where the screen ecompasses your total vision. Don’t be scared to get too close for this one.

hooray! this is great for the ‘original films’ industry and for Cuarón. hopefully he can now command more of his films in the future

Seems to be what PacRim should’ve been (and was – outside the US)…
Could be this years’ Inception. Was hoping Elysium would be that successful, but I’m okay with that. Best 3D work since Avatar. Go see it! And don’t support any Adam Sandler film anymore, okay?

  • HAIL THE NEW KING BIZ-ATCH!!

Cuaron bitched-slapped every single other blockbuster filmmaker out there today (except Jimmy Cameron) with this movie. The pretenders to the throne, Peter Jackson and Chris “I ruined Batman” Nolan, have had their asses thoroughly kicked in an epic embarrassment. CUARON! CUARON! CUARON!

You really need to get out more. There is life beyond the basement, trust me.
