It was a photo finish for the top two box office draws on Friday. Based on studio estimates, Insidious Chapter 3 came out on top with $10.4 million from 3,002 locations. But Spy, the latest R-rated comedy starring Mellissa McCarthy and directed by Paul Feig (the two also collaborated on Bridesmaids and The Heat) was not far behind with $10.25 million from 3,711 locations. In fact, estimates for the two films are close enough that it’s hard to say (until final numbers are released) which movie actually claimed first place. And yet, box office tradition demands that a winner be named and that winner is clearly Insidious 3 – for now.

In terms of the weekend race, Spy is expected to pull ahead by a significant margin. The R-rated comedy should bring in at least $32 million through Sunday: in-between the $26.2 million debut of Bridesmaids and the $39 million of 2013’s The Heat.

For its part, Insidious Chapter 3 is expected to claim approximately $24 million. That’s way down from the $40.2 million that Chapter 2 earned in its debut back in September 2013. On the other hand, that’s more than enough to make Insidious 3 a financial hit after only three days. The Insidious franchise (like many entries in the horror genre) is known for its extremely thrifty budgets. The first film cost just $1.5 million and ended up with a domestic total of $54 million. The budget for Chapter 3 has reportedly stretched to $10 million but, even so, how many summer movies can more than double their budget in three days? Disney is still waiting for Tomorrowland to earn half its budget after two weeks.

And speaking of summer disappointments, let’s check in with Entourage. The big screen version of the HBO comedy series realized a solid opening on Wednesday: taking in over $5.3 million from 3,058 locations (including Tuesday previews). By Thursday the movie was down 62.5%, though that is an understandable weekday drop. What is of more concern is the film’s $3.7 million Friday estimate. Early projections had Entourage earning close to $15 million this weekend but, based on Friday’s result, it looks like $11 million is the limit for Vince, Drama, Turtle, et. al.
