Friday Box Office – MADAGASCAR 3 Still on Top as ROCK OF AGES and THAT’S MY BOY Fall Flat

     June 16, 2012

After one week of positive box office performance with the debuts of Madagascar 3 and Prometheus, things have gone back to bleak. That’s because each of this weekend’s new titles stumbled badly on their first day in theatres. Neither Rock of Ages, the PG-13 musical starring Tom Cruise, nor That’s My Boy, the R-rated comedy starring Adam Sandler, managed to shine: Rock of Ages earned an estimated $5.3 million from 3,470 locations while That’s My Boy took in just $4.6 million from 3,030. To illustrate how bad those numbers are for a summer movie, The Three Stooges earned more ($5.6 million) on its first Friday… in April. Granted, mid-June is not exactly a box office hot spot but even Mr. Popper’s Penguins managed a $6.3 million debut at this time last year. So, instead of the $25 to $30 million that these titles were aiming for, they will now be lucky to see their weekend totals rise above the mid-teens. Of course, this is great news for Madagascar 3, which will continue to hold the top spot on the weekend chart for a second week in a row.  Full details and analysis tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Madagascar 3 $10,025,000 $94.9
2 Prometheus $5,825,000 $74.4
3 Rock of Ages $5,350,000 $5.35
4 That’s My Boy $4,600,000 $4.6
5 Snow White & the Huntsman $4,000,000 $112.7

Sucks, “That’s my boy” deserves to be number one. It’s beyond funny. These movie goers are crazy.

    • Really?

I saw the movie last night and this was the last Adam Sandler film I will see. Big fan at first but this was terrible. There was only 10 people when I was there.

No. The movie goers who pay to see Adam Sandler aren’t interested in a raunchy R rated movie, and the people who ARE interested in a raunchy R rated movie don’t care about Adam Sandler anymore. The movie was a recipe for small box office returns.

I have a feeling Prometheus will finish above Madagascar 3 next week :)

    • Tyler

That may be a possibility, but neither will be number one next week. Disney’s “Brave” is coming out and Disney tends to own any weekend they put an animated movie on (Mars Needs Moms excluded). Theres also “Seeking a Friend For the End of the World” which could do well, same with “Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter”. Although, I have a strange feeling that Abe Lincoln might end up being the “Jonah Hex” of 2012. Either way, this is good news for Prometheus, maybe we can get a sequel. This is also great news for Adam Sandler, maybe he will finally take a look at his past efforts and see why they are so poorly received.

Hopefully Fox view’s Prometheus as a big enough failure that they scrap the writing room and bring in some far better talent.

Finally, a Sandler movie bombs. Sometimes America gives me a glimmer of hope. *Tear rolls down cheek.

Took daughter to see Rock of Ages last night. It was really well done and the music was great. A musical on film. I’ve heard that the reviews were down on it because it wasn’t as good as Gone with the Wind or some shit.

If you’re going to see this movie, its because you want to see a musical. If you don’t want to see a musical, don’t go.

Having said that–this movie is NOT PG-13. I don’t know how they managed to slip this past the review board, but it should have been R rated. There’s no nudity–but there is tons of drinking, swearing and sexual content and suggestive themes. LOTS of sexual content. LOTS.

Oh … Julianne Hough has a nice thick figure on her. Will be paying more attention to her career going forward.

Never have made it through an Adam Sandler movie. Never understood why people think he’s so funny but then I don’t think most of these so-called comics, comedians, ‘funny people’ are humorous at all. Vulgar, yes funny, no. Real life is funny, humorous and basically a big joke but these comedy movies – not even close.

Prometheus is a winner with these two new releases bombing, too. Why no mention of that?

Frankly, I’m impressed with the way people have responded to movies so far this summer season. For the most part, the films that were good did well, and the films that were just misconceived from the get go failed. Doesn’t always work out that way.

Oh my god…. has it happened? Has America finally caught on that Adam Sandler is a lazy fuck who laughs in your face every time you pay to see one of his badly made & quickly ‘written’ movies?
