Friday Box Office: PACIFIC RIM Falls to GROWN UPS 2

After a confusing day that saw the top three films shift almost hourly, Friday’s official estimates are out and Sony’s Grown Ups 2 is on top… for now. The sequel to 2010′s Grown Ups took in an estimated $16.3 million from 3,491 locations, including $2.3 million from Thursday pm previews. Grown Ups 2 was originally expected to match the $40 million debut of its predecessor, but tracking has now been upgraded to the $45 million range. At third on Friday, Despicable Me 2 is also expected to earn $45 million this weekend, indicating that the box office confusion is far from over.

For a case in point, look no further than Pacific Rim. For a time, the Guillermo del Toro feature was expected to take top honors yesterday. Instead, Pacific Rim placed second with an estimated $14.6 million from 3,275 runs. That includes $3.6 million from the film’s Thursday pm and midnight screenings – exactly what World War Z saw from its early previews. That was enough to send Pacific Rim‘s weekend projections soaring to $50 million or more at one point yesterday though, at the moment, tracking has it back to $37 million through Sunday. With Friday’s estimates so unsteady, there is no reason to expect tracking to improve this weekend but check back tomorrow for updated estimates and analysis.

 Title Friday Total
1.  Grown Ups 2 $16,300,000 $16.3
2.  Pacific Rim $14,620,000 $14.6
3.  Despicable Me 2 $13,400,000 $197.8
4.  The Heat $4,200,000 $102.5
5.  The Lone Ranger  $3,370,000 $63.3

It really is a sad day in America when the garbage dump that is grown ups beats a great original action sic-fi movie like Pacific Rim. Damn people are useless.

    • Dev1359

Even worse is the fact that this was miles better than any of those crappy Transformers movies, and yet they’ll eat that shit up. Makes no sense to me.

      • Saltonstall

Two words: Brand recognition. Transformers is something idiots recognize, so they’ll go see it, whereas Pacific Rim makes them scratch their heads, simply because they haven’t heard of it before.

      • 80sRobot

To be honest, I always wondered if the title might be confusing to moviegoers. When one thinks “Pacific Rim”, the first image that probably comes up is a WWII air combat movie perhaps set in Japan…

I still think they should have gone with “Monster Punchers”

PR is a mess of a movie, incompetent on every aspect. It’s sad alright that utter crap like grown ups makes it big at the B.O. but the success of a poorly conceived and plain mediocre movie like PR doesn’t looks too bright either.

  • Werefon

    WOW! It is just SAD(((
People prepare for more Adam Sandler getting Deer pee in his mouth movies than Awesome Action Sci-Fi films! I am really confused now! PacRim floped! FUCK THAT SHIT.
Every time when Shit Gets money and good film is not = Good Original Flicks are dying!
We not gonna see the awesome stuff like Pacific Rim anytime soon!

How fucking stupid people should be to go to one of Sandler unfunny comedy’s? After the last 10 horseshit horrible donkey piss products he’s done, it’s obvious that this one not better! But still they go to it like cows go to slaughter!

My explanation of why Grown-ups is doing better…

Grown-ups is the comedy equivalent of the expendables, these actors don’t bring in the crowds they used to but when they team up people get excited. As for Pacific Rim, the majority of audiences are not interested in going to the theatres for cartoons, no matter the premise.

Do not start insulting me for my post, I’m not trying to say grown-ups is better than pacific rim, I’m just trying to explain what the majority of audiences think. I’m not interested in seeing either film and i’m not trying to insult cartoons/anime, but I know most people prefer live action over those. A movie like Pacific Rim is going to be full of CGI and that is my reasoning for the cartoon comparison.

People suck. The truly amazing thing is that Pac Rim is a more family friendly film than Grown Ups 2 (see deer piss).

    • RiddleThemThis

I don’t think anyone is worried about letting their child see Pacific Rim, I grew up on Godzilla films and Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. I honestly can’t imagine someone not letting their kid see Pacific Rim.

Absolutely. Pacific Rim is the kind of movie 10-year-old me would’ve hungrily devoured (and 20-year-old me enjoyed it too). Undiscerning 10-year-old me would’ve walked out of Grown Ups 2 shrugging at best.

Im’ taking my 11year old Cousin to see Pacific Rim next week. Nobody’s saying anything to that. The problem was, he had never heard of the movie (neither had his parents, for that matter). But ofc he had heard of Grown Ups 2………

      Don’t you mean country?

Pacific Rim is the thinking person’s transformers; cue Americans running a mile in the opposite direction.

      • Khan

Everybody go see PACIFIC RIM !

  • kps

Ugh. You really really can’t blame studios for churning out terrible sequels when this happens. This is a really important weekend for original franchises.

  • Saltonstall

This is the closest I’ve actually come to saying “Fuck people”. Just goddamn it.

    • cetrata

You’ve said it now and I agree. The transformers comparison is ridiculous. Aside from giant robots, that’s the only similarity I could think of to Transformers. I see more Neon Geon and kaiju films like Godzilla, mothra than Transformers. It’s a homage to the monster films yet audiences don’t see it. They don’t want to take anything that has the slightest similarity to transformers but would rather take a crappier sequel to Transformers. Fuck this country.

  • Harry Palm

I just want to point out to people that, although ‘Grown Ups 2′ is number 1, it’s still only making $16 million, which isn’t good at all.

    • Werefon

It’s good for its budget and now there will be the 3rd one! And there never will be Pacific Rim 2 or another robot vs monster movies, also No Big budgets for Del Toro anymore! That’s the reality

      • IMPYEMU

What are you talking about? Just because Grown Ups 2 did better in its opening weekend doesn’t mean Pacific Rim is a flop, that it won’t have a sequel, or that there won’t be robot vs monster movies anymore. What is the matter with you?

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

He’s probably over-stating things, but Pacific Rim’s production budget was $185 million, and it’s only going to take in $40 million in it’s opening weekend. This isn’t Lone Ranger bad, but it’s not good. It’s extremely likely this film won’t make a profit unless people overseas eat it up. Therefore it’s unlikely to get a sequel and it’s unlikely they’ll trust Del Toro with this kind of money and freedom again.

      • Werefon

The budget is $195 million! WB can be blamed for not spending money on marketing! No surprise Legendary left!

Wtf are you talking about? You simply do not understand movie business.
When Giant Budget movie with a specific theme is having success; other studios start producing movies with the same themes that made mentioned film successful! If the movie is not successful the process if opposite!
So, it leads to a results such as:
        - Studio will not produce a sequel to the unprofitable movie;
        - No studio will trust a big budget again to a director who shot unprofitable film (even if its fucking awesome);
        - Since the film with a theme – Giant Robots vs. Giant Monster isn’t successful, Other studios will not make a movies with such themes any time soon;

The fact that you didn’t understand that makes you pretty stupid and more so, you unsuccessfully tried to argue with simple business! WHAT IS MATTER WITH YOU? Lost you logic and brain in Sandlers ass?!

      • IMPYEMU

$16 million in one day for a comedy is a good but not great number.

  • Daryl

Poor Guillermo del Toro! He has been unable to defeat Adam Ouch I have beaten on my balls! Sandler at the box office. It’s like you’ve been defeated in an obstacle race by the retarded kid in your gym class.

  • Grayden

Grown Ups 2 is at 7% on RT.com
Pacific Rim is at 72% on RT.com

Failing to see the logic here.

Granted this was only for Friday. Pretty sure once word of mouth gets out, Pacific Rim will win the weekend.

    • IMPYEMU

What logic are you failing to see here, that a family-friendly comedy starring widely known actors earned more money in one night than Pacific Rim, starring Charlie Hunnam did?

If the scores for the films on RT were switched, then there would be reason to doubt logic.

      Be patient.

      • Grayden

The logic that a bunch of middle-aged has-been funny men who employ “dick and fart” humor a second time around made more money than a rarified childhood experience dreamed of by every kid in the 70s and 80s.

I am patient, and the fact that Pacific Rim made 3+ million from midnight showings means that it technically has made more than Grown Ups 2.

      • Khan

        Agreed.

  • Harry

Has anyone actually seen Pacific Rim? It was garbage. Charlie Day’s character was terrible, his rival that walked on the cane was basically Tucker from There’s Something About Mary. Idris Elba was meh, Charlie Hunman was the worst lead in a blockbuster since Noah Ringer in The Last Airbender. The Quagmire sounding guy with the Wayne Newton haircut? The cliche guy is a jerk for no reason. This film was poisoned with cliches and awful dialog, terrible over the top characters (does subtlety no longer exist with Del Toro?) and a terrible musical score. This was Daredevil/Battlefield Earth bad to me. I am not a troll. Many people in my theater were laughing unintentionally. Do not say, “Let’s see you make a movie”, just please tell me what was good about this movie besides the CG, because I just didn’t see anything good about it. In fact, I thought it was awful.

    • DjangoBro

I don’t know man, Battlefield Earth bad? I think you are over-exaggerating. If you honestly believed that it was that bad, I don’t think you have seen that many movies. I thought Pacific Rim did a fine job in dealing with how it wanted to portray itself. It didn’t in anyway take itself seriously because by the end of the day Del Toro knew that this is a monster vs robot film. It’s a love letter to anime and over-the-top cartoons. Honestly, how in depth did you want the movie to go? The movie gave the audiences exactly what they wanted and that was the Robots. But with a premise like Pacific Rim, how in depth can you go? It’s like you were expecting Zero Dark Thirty. When I walked in, i knew what i came in there for. It definitely wasn’t for the humans, but I was surprised that Del Toro at least tried to develop some of the characters. I am not gonna defend the dialog, it did have corny moments but that was part of the charm, it was like watching a saturday morning cartoon. Transformers constantly tried to take itself seriously and it obviously didn’t work so why do it with this?

      • Harry

I actually would have preferred it to be taken a little more seriously. Cloverfield was taken a little more serious and I was more entertained with its sequences because I actually cared about some of the characters. After a director makes something as good as Pan’s Labyrinth, you don’t expect something this cliche. My problem was with the characters. I get some people feel they were going for the cartoonish type characters but let Raja Gosnell direct it, not Guillermo Del Toro.

    • zac

completely agree! cgi was fun, but dialgoue and story sucked balls! like u said not trolling just honest, it was ordinary

    • Grayden

Have you actually ever seen a Kaiju movie from Japan? They’re all like this. Rubbish story, forgettable characters, monsters that kick ass. I don’t like Godzilla for the story or the tiny humans, I like it for the big radioactive bi-pedal lizard that shoots irradiated fire from it’s mouth and body slams three-headed dragons, giant manti, and plant monsters alike.

      • Harry

Maybe that is what it is. I see many movies but I’ve never seen a Kaiju film. I think it’s possible for an all around monster movie to be made. I thought Cloverfield was highly entertaining. No masterpiece, but I enjoyed some of the characters and the thrills were there. I really hope the Godzilla movie in 2014 isn’t just action with bad characters. It’s possible to make CG films with good characters. Pacific Rim just didn’t have them for me. I don’t expect every movie to be an Oscar winner but Max Landis had it right in regards to movies nowadays, plot is driving these films now, not characters, and it should be the other way around.

    • http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-4-new-skins-themes-launches/740147-neurotech-hd.html#post5637502 Jay

Yeah? That’s too bad. If it had good CG I can still look forward to it, though :)

What makes this weekend more absurd is that most of the critics that have panned PacRim had no business reviewing it in the first place, they should have just kept their mouths shut because it wasn’t a movie for them…. Throw-Up 2 is for morons and it appears we have more of them paying to see dog shit then halfway intelligent people who want to get their moneys worth, how sad is that.

But today is a new day and it seems like allot of people are planning to see Pacific Rim on Saturday or Sunday…. it almost feels like it’s our civic duty to see PacRim as many times as possible to help it say alive long enough for all the retard zombies to figure it out next week when TV tells them that “Fan agree, Pacific Rim is Awesome and Throw-Up 2 is crap”

    • cetrata

This isn’t that surprising. Family films will always do better then Sci Fy films that are directly aimed at the teenage/twenty something demographic. Just think about it. A family of 5 buys tickets to watch Adam Sandler get pissed on while a single dude who ventured from his mothers basement for the first time in weeks buys a ticket to Pacific Rim. Can’t compete with that.

His humor just changed. He went from frat-boy to father. That’s a contrast that is hard on fans. I still like Sandler, though – but as I get older I tend to like nice people. When I was an angry punk of a youth my sense of humor was very different.

It’s a shame, for sure. Pacific Rim was a very well-done film with an interesting and extremely well crafted universe. In the long run, though, I think positive word of mouth will carry Pacific Rim further than Grown Ups 2 will ever go.

If This is the End beat Pacific Rim that would’ve been understandable. But how these washed up comedic actors (except Chris Rock) beat Pacific rim is mind-boggling. Pacific Rim really should’ve of gotten at least one star. Idris Elba won’t be big until maybe next year time. I honestly think Ryan Reynolds would’ve done a good job in the Hunnam role. I think he’s a great actor and well known. Marketing was weak. With Reynolds and a better marketing campaign the gross could’ve been around sixty million.

I’m sure Pacific Rim will make money, but it’s a strange thing for such a huge movie to be beat out by a doofy comedy.

I guess this proves that people want more human interaction, and less robot-on-monster interaction.

    1. Pacific Rim was estimated by its studio to make between 30-35 opening weekend. It’s probably going to beat that number by 3-5. They never expected that much domestically. It will gross at least 300 worldwide, the foreign appeal is huge.

    2. 16 million opening day for a comedy is a great number. These movies are nowhere near as front loaded. Families don’t rush out. It will absolutely beat pacific rim opening weekend.

For the record I greatly enjoyed Pacific Rim, definitely worth seeing in IMAX if possible.

  • Mezmero
