Friday Box Office Report – THE HANGOVER Deflates Pixar’s UP

     June 6, 2009

hangover-zack.jpgThe first Friday in June had a little surprise for the box office – Todd Phillip’s “The Hangover” bested its higher-profile comedy competition, Universal’s “Land of the Lost”, as well as last week’s number one movie, Pixar’s “Up”.  A week with three non-sequel comedy releases would traditionally be ceded to the stronger holdover title, but with strong word of mouth and great reviews “The Hangover” managed to pull off a $16.5 million upset its first day out.  “Land of the Lost”, meanwhile, is a T-Rex sized disappointment at only $7.2 million so far.  Saturday matinee receipts should tip the weekend back in favor of “Up”, but for today its nice to see family values get trounced!   Check back tomorrow for the final word on the weekend
