It was another photo finish at the box office as holdover champion Rise of the Planet of the Apes battled The Help on the latter’s first Friday.  Apes was just barely ahead with an estimated $7.6 million to The Help’s $7.5 million.  Even with Friday so close, Rise should win the weekend with a projected $25 million.  The Help, which has been overperforming since its Wednesday debut, is expected to earn $23 million from Friday through Sunday.  Friday’s number three was not far behind the top two films.  Final Destination 5 took in an estimated $7.3 million from 3,155 locations for what should equal a first weekend of just under $20 million.  Friday’s final new releases put a bit more distance between their estimates and the top spots: 30 Minutes or Less earned an estimated $4.5 million from 2,888 locations while Fox’s Glee: The 3D Concert Movie fell short of the top five with just $2.5 million from 2,040 venues.  Full details and analysis tomorrow.

  Title Friday Total
1 Rise of the Planet of the Apes $7,600,000 $84.9
2 The Help $7,500,000 $17.4
3 Final Destination 5 $7,300,000 $7.3
4 30 Minutes or Less $4,500,000 $4.5
5 The Smurfs $3,700,000 $91.7

Glad to see Apes hanging tough. It was my second-favorite movie of the summer behind X-Men: First Class. I hope to see an equally intelligent/emotional sequel from the same cast and crew if it continues to pull in money.

My girl dragged me to The Help, and I was unimpressed overall. It was a tad too long, and it didn’t cover any new ground in the civil rights film genre. The performances all around were great, but it’s not the type of movie I care for. I hope it finds a decent audience, but this is definitely a film for women…

Will see 30 Minutes or Less tomorrow, and I have high hopes for it. Excellent cast, with Danny McBride being the highlight for me. I even loved Your Highness, but I like stupid stoner comedy.

When it was first announced, my first thought was “They’re still trying to keep this series going?” but Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes was fantastic. Good to see it hang around, hopefully the same writers and director come back for the next one.
