With a little something for everyone (with the possible exception of clinically depressed toddlers) one of late summer’s more fan-driven weekends at the box office got underway on Friday. The Expendables, the film with probably the deepest bench of supporters, came in first with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,270 locations. That was the point when Sylvester Stallone convinced 10 well-loved action stars to appear in his R-rated action extravaganza. The Expendables is now on track to bring in around $35 million this weekend, or over 80% of its reported budget. Fans of Julia Roberts (yes, they’re still out there) and Oprah’s Book Club were no less anxious to see how Eat, Pray Love would play. Sony’s adaptation of the popular memoir came in second with an estimated $9 million from 3,082 locations. Finally, fans of Canadian graphic novels, director Edgar Wright and Michael Cera – my people – have been following the progress of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World for more than a year now. Unfortunately, my people are few in number. Scott Pilgrim earned just $4.7 million on Friday from its 2,818 locations – 60% of what Kick-Ass brought in on its first day back in April. We’ll have full details on the weekend of battling genres tomorrow.

Well I saw it last night, it was pretty awesome. The theater was jam packed but the damn theaters didn't have very many showings of it. There was literally a 5 o'clock a 7 o'clock and a 9 o'clock. These type of movies I think do much better on DVD sales later on, you don't know how many Kick-Ass dvds I've packaged at Amazon (10x more than the majority of releases).
P.S: I bought the Nega Scott Pilgrim poster by Martin Ansin. Kind of expensive, but it'll go great with the color of my room so it was worth it.
pissed! I loved Scott Pilgrim, my showing was packed as well
Eh, makes sense, not to many people want to watch Pilgrim. I'm sure it has a small demo. I'll watch it soon enough and I'm sure it's pretty good, but it's no Inception or even Toy Story 3.
end of line
WOW. I didn't think Expendables had it in them. Althought I didn't love it as much as I wanted to, it did enjoy it. I think the problem was Stallone didn't bring anything new to the genre. But in his defense he said all along he just wanted to make an “80's” action film. And that's what he did.
Too bad for Scott Pilgrim. I think the marketing was all wrong. They pretty much went after the comic book/film nerd crowd. Well that's exactly who went to see it.
That kind of showing for Pilgrim seems like a minor disaster. It has been heavily pumped on the net since it was first rumored and has received better than decent reviews in what has turned out to be one of the most disappointing summers in memory. 60% of Kick Ass? I was convinced that this would play far better because it was that rare comic book movie that had plenty of appeal built in for girls/women. Granted, it will likely do very well in dvd sales and have a longer shelf life than much of the garbage released this summer, but…wow. I'm guessing Cera is wishing he was Jesse Eisenberg about now.
Probably the reason Scott Pilgrim did so poorly is because of the tremendous amount of hype. I get that there was excitement for the movie but sights like these need to lay off a bit. With all the interviews, clips, and behind the scenes looks that are posted on an almost daily basis, people get worn out before the movie even gets released. Come on people. Ease off a bit.
WOW I am shocked. Wright, Universal & Co must be very, very disappointed. Such a shame, I hate seeing hard work and strong creative efforts fail. I guess the interest just wasn't there outside the core fan group. Kind of feel sorry for Cera too; I imagine his career is pretty much done. As much as I love the kid, this is like, what, his 3rd or 4th box office bomb if you count Paper Heart? Maybe he should take a break; go to school or something and try to come back in a few years to try again. Pretty sad about all this, although I'm glad for Sly and Co.
From Deadline Hollywood: “This odd but innovative movie is yet another greenlight from the fired Mark Shmuger at Universal. He's the gift that keeps on giving the studio expensive underperformers.”
It makes you wonder whether there isn't something else going on here. I don't know that the audience for which this movie is intended necessarily cares about seeing a movie in the theater. It isn't as though there is a scarcity of cheap entertainment options available for the attention deficit generation.
