After last week’s bottleneck, the box office hosts just one major release this weekend: The Wolverine. The sixth installment in Fox’s X-Men franchise earned an estimated $21 million from 3,924 locations on Friday, including $4 million from its Thursday pm and midnight previews. In terms of opening days, that’s just under the $21.3 million that X-Men: First Class earned in June 2011. That suggests that The Wolverine will end the weekend in the $55 million range of the series’ last feature film instead of the $60-$70 million many expected.
While that is not a bad start, it would be a bit of a disappointment for The Wolverine, considering that X-Men Origins: Wolverine opened with $85 million in May of 2009 and that First Class managed $55 million without the benefit of 3D ticket prices. Full details on this weekend’s box office tomorrow.
