Friday Box Office: TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Collects $41.6 Million on Opening Day

Three years after their last box office bow, the Transformers are back.  The fourth installment in Paramount’s giant robot franchise took in an estimated $41.6 million at Friday’s box office, including $8.75 million from Thursday pm previews.  That puts the bots on track for about $98 million through Sunday: the same range that Transformers: Dark of the Moon landed on this weekend in 2011.  Of course, Transformers 3 opened on a Wednesday, so by the time it locked in its $97.8 million debut weekend it had also collected $65 million from its first two days in theatres.  Even without the head start, Transformers 4 should deliver this year’s biggest opening weekend – stripping Captain America: The Winter Soldier of the title it has held since April.

Hit the jump for details and Friday’s top five films.

transformers-age-of-extinction-mark-wahlberg-2Anything over $95 million will be good enough to secure 2014’s biggest debut, but there is still a chance that Age of Extinction will make it past $100 million by Sunday.  It’s hard to believe that, at summer’s half-way mark, we are still waiting for a film to reach triple digits in its debut, but it’s true.  And so it falls to Transformers 4 to shake the box office out of its recent slump  – preferably before its laughably bad reviews catch up to it.  Age of Extinction currently ranks an abysmal 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, though comparable reviews didn’t stop Revenge of the Fallen from earning over $400 million at the domestic box office in 2009.

Of course, the series has seen some changes since its domestic peak five summers ago.  Even with the addition of Mark Wahlberg this time around, Transformers 4 is not guaranteed to reach $300 million in North America.  That would be troubling for a film that reportedly cost $210 million before marketing, but luckily for Paramount, Age of Extinction is virtually guaranteed  a gigantic overseas run.  In 2011, Dark of the Moon brought in over $770 million from its international theatres, which accounted for 68% of that film’s global haul of $1.12 billion.  With China expected to contribute $200 million to the global pot in 2014, the studio should have more than enough incentive to keep the Transformers series animated for years to come – Yay?  Check back tomorrow for complete details on this weekend’s box office (including all non-Transformers titles).

 Title Friday Total
1.  Transformers 4 $41,600,000 $41.6
2.  22 Jump Street $5,000,000 $129.4
3.  How to Train Your Dragon 2 $4,100,000 $112.8
4.  Think Like a Man Too $3,400,000 $41.1
5.  Maleficent $2,593,000 $196.2

You don’t have to go see the movie. It’s pretty simple.

Its officially happened. I am surprised it took so long, but someone is finally parenting to be Leo Spaceman. Its a shame, I liked being the doctor, but I didn’t write the above two comments about Harvey Dent and it being simple.

I hope it won’t happen but me pointing out someone is pretending to be me here will probably only lead to more people doing it to mock me for complaining or questioning if this comment is indeed the real Leo or the Fake which I hope doesn’t lead more to do it because eventually even the dumbest will do it and Leo Spaceman will be officially just irritatingly stupid.

Its been fun, but I guess its time to go back to being a Doctor and a pretty good dentist too.

Wow I’m really sorry lk and Batman voice.

I guess my tablet doesn’t properly work with this Discuss feature. I opened this page on my Nexus 7 a few hours ago. Since then lk and Batman’s Voice commented. Then I came back to comment on a different comment and then I selected show two new comments and for whatever reason both of your comments were listed as being posted by Leo Spaceman.

I saw comments that appeared to have been posted by another Leo Spaceman and I just assumed someone was hating on the doctor. I am sorry guys, I guess its my own fault if these two comments kills the Doctor with others pretending to be Leo Spaceman and trolling me with really stupid posts.

        Again, I’m sorry guys.

      • b

I hope you don’t use that kind of grammar in your film reviews.

      • lk

You should have added that you’re a film review to your original post. It made it seem like you HAD to go see it for some reason. But if you’re a film reviewer then…yeah.. I guess you have to haha.

Just one question……Harvey Dent …..can we trust him?

No. He is passionate about his work but his heart is black as night.

    • F*** Michael Bay

Seriously… Meanwhile great movies like Edge of Tomorrow are shunned at the Box Office, and we continue to get lazy rehashed Transformer sequels that are the exact same every single time. Michael Bay will be coming back for 5&6, guaranteed. Gonna have to wait another decade before someone with actual directing talents can make a good TF movie. Until then, I’ll continue to sit these turds out

      • TigerFIST

I agree with everything you said except the fuck Michael Bay part. A lot of the humor in the movie was his that didn’t work but I actually hate the writer Ehren Krueger. He’s the one that’s definitely needs to go. He wrote 2, 3, and 4.

      • Leo Spaceman

Kurtzman and Orci wrote the first one after they went to Hasbro to pitch a GI Joe movie. Hasbro passed on GI Joe at the time because at the time the Iraq war made it feel inappropriate but instead they let the duo do Transformers with Spielberg as the God father who would guide the movie. The presence of the military in the film originates from the intention to do a GI Joe film. They brought in Bay who originally balked at the idea of doing a S**tty kids toy movie until he realized that he would be a story about a boy who buys a car and later finds out its an alien robot which actually means he realized he would be given a giant budget to mix in fast cars, hot babes, and big explosions.

With the success of the first one, the studio rushed through the second film but with the onset of the writers strike, Kurtzman and Orci only had the time to complete a 27 page very rough draft which was submitted the night before strike began. I don’t remember how exactly Krueger got his fingers in there but I think he came in when the strike was over after K and O didn’t want to continue working on a film that was already half filmed because Bay thought that he could just make the movie up as he went and said he was going to meet his deadline because Bay’s ego was so big he thought he could still deliver the same quality (kind of) of story as the first one. It still went on to be a giant success regardless of how horrible it was though it clearly reeked of Bay. Did you know Jonah Hill was originally supposed to play Sam’s roommate Leo? Just imagine Jonah talking about Kitten Calenders. It was clearly intended for someone deemed somewhat loserish as comic relief to make the main character seem cool and Heroic (see TJ Miller in Age of Extinction), but Bay didn’t want a fat person in his movie who wouldn’t be the but of some quick joke. Michael Bay had gotten his hooks into the film and the studio execs and erased the feeling of Spielberg’s sentimentality. Bay believed he was validated by the fact that Revenge of the Fallen still went on to be a giant F**king success despite being one of the most poorly constructed big budget films ever directed.

While Spielberg still had some power when Dark of the Moon came out (in regards to firing Megan Fox), this was now entirely Bay’s film. He brought back only Krueger from the second film as he realized that Krueger would give him exactly what he wanted. Big giant action sequences with minimal plot stringing them together. This allowed Bay to blow things up as he saw fit but had minimum requirements when filming as all human scenes were left wholly and entirely not relevant to the plot. This meant that Bay was given a basic outline of how the human scenes should be shot (location, dress, characters, etc.) but without the dialogue having to specifically move the story along in a certain way, Bay could wing it as he went and string it together in the editing room.

For Age of the Extinction (I haven’t seen it yet) Bay repeated exactly what he did with Dark of the Moon by bringing back Krueger to give an outline and then have Bay film things he thought were Awesome.

I know my s**t about this. I have over 300 transformers (its only Transformers, I don’t play with action figures, I just like the mechanics of things changing). I whole heartedly know that Bay is a terrible director, because I have seen the movies more than most people because I like watching them transform, but I have seen all of the flaws of the films by now and can see how perfectly it fits with all of the news I read about the first 3 movies which I very closely followed during production.

Why the F**k did I just give an entire lesson on Bay’s Transformers films, I just meant to correct you about saying Krueger wrote the first film. My bad.

      • Grayden

The first Transformers movie really isn’t that bad. Also, I don’t think Bay wants to make another one. I hope beyond hope that he decides to make something else. Even if it’s got tons of “Bayhem”, it’d be better than another giant robot lamefest.

      • Leo Spaceman

He says constantly that he doesn’t want to make another one while negotiating because he knows the studios will bend to him, but while I haven’t seen this new one yet I heard the rumor was this new trilogy will be about introducing Unicron. Bay won’t let this go, he will make all of the films before someone else gets to completely reboot the series rather than Bays very soft reboot.

But Bay really makes no effort to keep these films coherent. He films the humans doing things that he thinks are Awesome and on a technical level are, but then he just CGIs in the transformers later and it just doesn’t work. ZHis editing process does not blend the humans and the Transformerss.

Michael Bay would be a great CEO that most low level workers would quietly hate, but he lacks creative inspiration to be a good director for these kinds of high budget CGI tests. He gets things done, just not done well.

I wonder if Collider is happy to have contributed to Transformers’ success by promoting the film through the roof… Internet movie sites need to boycott everything related to the franchise.

    • Leo Spaceman

I’ve said this before, and I will say it again. Collider will never bite the Teet that finds them. Transformers gets them more clicks than a lot of articles and the studio gives them VIP treatment when accessing the movie to promote it.

    • DEADP00L

It did worse than the first installment and is the second worst sci installment of the year thus far; so if anything it proves that no amount of promotion could convince people to fork over their hard earned cash to this abomination.

We take total responsibility. Every film we write about is a huge success at the box office.

      • The Flobbit

Ha ha. Of course that is not the case. My point is that perhaps if critics and film productions showed a public “shunning” of bad movies to the point of not promoting them, perhaps it would get some people to take note.

Then again, I understand what your job is, and the impossibility of this.

Read darren at them0vieblog in Dublin. He reviews them all and is very knowledgeable about them. He and I don’t always agree but then we come from a different perspective. He has gotten me to see many I would have skipped. I would not have missed my multiple screenings of The Dark Knight Rises for anything in the world on theatre screens. TDKR is a blessing.

    Weekend Opening of the year

    Captain America 2 – 95 million
    Godzilla – 93 Million
    Spiderman 2 – 91 million
    X-men – 90 million
    Maleficent – 60 million
    22 Jump Street – 57 million
Fault in the Stars – 48 million
Edge of Tomorrow – 28 million

Transformers 4 – 41 million for Friday nothing yet on Saturday.

    Alas the audience have spoken!

    • D

You get that it made $50 million in ONE DAY right?

Which means it will make around 100 million over the weekend…so…yeah it will likely beat Cap2 for best opening weekend of the year. Gotta read a little closer, there buddy.
Unfortunately, you are right about one thing…. the (stupid dumb shit) audience has spoken….

      • DEADP00L

Yeah I have my doubts. I checked mojo and it’s not 50 million it’ still 41 and you don’t round that off and get 50 you round that down to 40. Will it hit 50 probably but I can’t see this doing better than TF2.

I might have more faith in people than you do though. But top Captain America 2 domestically? No. Not going to happen. This series has been going downhill since TF2 and unless China fits most of the bill I can’t see this doing better on opening day.

      • Leo Spaceman

Wow your very wrong comment was corrected, and you still replied with an incorrect response.

      • DEADP00L

Don’t see how since I only counted DOMESTIC this entire time. You guys thought I counted international? It’s not finished yet for me to do that.

Right now it made 80 million international – that’s still dismally low for TF. Thus far its only topped TF1 by 10 million when projections were far more bloated than that. Don’t get me wrong I still don’t see it hitting 100 in one day.

      • Leo Spaceman

I really hope you are just trying to troll because no one should be stupid enough to still be getting it wrong after being told you wrong twice. We aren’t talking about domestic vs international we are talking about opening day vs opening weekend.

      • DEADP00L

I already told you I only counted DOMESTIC. Why is that so hard to understand? I don’t care about the idiots abroad, the Arabs aren’t getting this movie for another month and they are suckers when it comes to this mindless crap. So international is going to inflate- there are ALOT of mindless drones out there. China by default is going to have the numbers blow up – since it’s based in china for a quarter of the godsawful movie. I only care about what the numbers say HERE. We got idiots here but it’s encouraging to know there aren’t as many as there are out there.

      • Leo Spaceman

Trolling is no longer fun when you bring race in in a manner that isn’t playful. Now you just sound like a hateful prick who who tries to troll because you are miserable. The fun is fianlky gone.

      • DEADP00L

Are you done being a cop out? Because the whole troll thing died at least 2 years ago. Now have something to say or don’t say anything at all.

      • http://twilightirruption.blogspot.com/ abbeysbooks

What is important. A big box office that will soon be forgotten or a classic that will be remembered always. Short term money or a long term investment changing the way future cinema will be viewed and made. Orson Welles career might help you on this.

      • http://www.rockydavies.com/ RockyDavies

I think you are still missing it. This isn’t the weekend haul, just the FRIDAY haul. It still has Saturday and Sunday to add to its weekend haul meaning it will likely pass $100 mil for opening weekend. Beating Cap 2 domestically.

      • DEADP00L

Yeah I just got the app working again so you’re not wrong. F%%%%%%%%%c!! there are a shitload of idiots out there.

    • mattinacan

      you are confused

    • Grayden

Godzilla did $93M over it’s opening WEEKEND, as were the totals of most of the films you listed. The $41M Transfomers 4 has made, reported in this article, is for FRIDAY only. Your entire post is rendered moot.

      • DEADP00L

I know I finally had to go to the daily number count to see the opening MY BAD guys!

Friday for Godzilla was 38 million Saturday was 70 Million.

TF1 – 8 Million on Sat. 36 Million on Sun

        TF2 – 62 Million on Friday. Sat 91 million

        TF3 – 97 million on Friday. Sat 132 million

        TF4 – 41 million estimate for Friday

I got nothing for Saturday yet.

The audience I saw this with greeted the end with thunderous applause. I just wanted to get up and ask them if they actually watched the movie

    • DEADP00L

They were clapping because it was OVER. I asked some people around me just to be sure. The number one complaint was – it was too long.

      • Austin Kemprowski

Man, I wish that were true. It was not the applause of a desperate group of people, it was the applause of people who felt that 17 hour movie was the best damn thing they’ve ever seen

Shoot, if you’re close to the Mississippi River, then yea can just walk in. All that’s needed!

  • Frank

I honestly don’t see how people can stand it. I was a big proponent of the “I just want to watch robots and explosions” argument during the first movie, but by the time TF 3 came around, I was shifting in my seat during the 45 minutes of nonstop action at the end. As much as people like to hyperbolize all of the explosion porn, it actually gets kind of boring. You don’t need MORE action, you need unique, exciting set pieces or else it all just starts to blur together.

Unfortunately, as long as people keep buying tickets, it just keeps enforcing the idea to Hollywood that people will take whatever stupid shit they want us to watch, no questions asked.
