Amid rumblings of mid-August inventory-clearing, no fewer than five new titles hit the multiplexes this weekend. But for most of us there were only two questions that Friday’s box-office results needed to answer: how high could Neill Blomkamp’s “District 9″ climb and how far would Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe” fall? As for the former, the Peter Jackson-produced sci-fi flick parlayed its great word of mouth into a first place finish with over $14 million from 3,049 locations. “Joe” was not so lucky. Last week’s top seed fell a big 68% on Friday to third place behind the maudlin posturing of Eric Bana in “The Time Traveler’s Wife”. Check back tomorrow for full coverage of the rest of this weekend’s new releases.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | District 9 | $14,200,000 | $14,200,000 |
| 2 | Time Traveler’s Wife | $7,700,000 | $7,700,000 |
| 3 | GI Joe | $7,000,000 | $83,400,000 |
| 4 | Julie & Julia | $3,600,000 | $34,900,000 |
| 5 | G-Force | $2,100,000 | $94,200,000 |

Excellent news – an inexpensive, well made sci fi flick beats out the shlock. Let’s hope the victory is sustained in the weeks to come. Big studios have mastered pricey and stupid, but they rarely crack cheap and smart for some reason. I’d like to think they were taking notes this time around.
