Since it’s apparently the year of the sex buddy comedy, a new red band trailer for Friends with Benefits has been released. While I’m a fan of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, and quite enjoyed director Will Gluck’s Easy A, this movie just looks painfully unfunny. The newest red band trailer really doesn’t do much to change my mind. The highlights (ie. only amusing parts) are Emma Stone and Andy Samberg, but it seems they only appear for small cameo-ish roles. However, Hunter saw the film and enjoyed it—he’s even mentioned in the ad—so maybe it works better as a whole. But I’m not holding my breath.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson and Richard Jenkins. Friends with Benefits opens July 22nd.

Here’s the trailer:

Here’s the official synopsis:

Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis) think it’s going to be easy to add the simple act of sex to their friendship, despite what Hollywood romantic comedies would have them believe. They soon discover however that getting physical really does always lead to complications.

Yet another stupid No Strings Attached.

  • The great Con

I have to disagree with you on this one. Yes No Strings Attached and Love and Other Drugs tried for the same thing and ended up being bland but this one still has me hopeful. Justin Timberlake is excellent – Mike Myers even stating how jealous he is of Timberlake’s many abilities – and Mila Kunis is really coming into her own on the big screen (finally). When you add Will Gluck into the equation you get a pretty good mix that gives reason for hope. Where the trailers for FWB might not whelm I had the same issues with the trailers for EASY A. You get the same quirky feel from both and the same type of banter humor. Reasons enough to hold on to my hope.

Yeah, but god she’s soooo hot!!!

    Checked a screening last month.

Quickly about Emma Stone and Andy Samberg- they are only in the first few minutes to break up with Timberlake and Kunis, respectively. Good for a few laughs as the two stars are getting dumped in similar fashion- simultaneously -on different coasts.

In his new found bachelorhood, JT goes on a job interview in New York, being courted by a savvy headhunter, the lovely Mia Kunis.

    Friendship ensues, benefits soon follow.

The plot prides itself on breaking the campy rules set forth in typical rom-com’s. A great movie-in-the-movie cameo with Jason Segal and Rashida Jones is used as a basis.

As quickly as Benefits tries to break from the mold, it collapses back into it. I admired the initial honesty of casual relationships, dating, sex, and consequences in the vein of ‘About Last Night’. The angle ran out of steam and we’re left with boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy goes to get girl back.

Chemistry between Timberlake and Kunis kept the film together when it could have unraveled under each characters pile of parental issues.

A solid date movie and typical romantic comedy, even though it pretends not to be.

…and Woody Harrelson as JT’s co-worker and macho homosexual relationship mentor was a little off.

The immensely underrated Richard Jenkins was poignant, gave a rich performance.

Oh, and that’s what happened to Jenna Elfman.
