There are a lot of people who don’t like Hillary Clinton. Being the Democratic Presidential nominee, being the first woman with a serious shot at the Presidency, and being in the spotlight for a few decades, you’re going to make a few enemies. But why exactly is she so despised? Specifically, why has been labeled as “secretive” and “inauthentic”? How did we get to the public persona of Hillary Clinton that we have today?

The answer requires a bit of history, and if you have time, I encourage you to watch Frontline’s The Choice, which delves into the biographies of both Clinton and Trump. But if you’re a little strapped for time, then I encourage you to watch this clip from last night’s Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.

In the segment, Bee explains that we didn’t start out with Hillary Clinton. We started out with Hillary Rodham, and then the media slowly grinded away at that person to make her palatable. Now, while you could argue “Clinton should have stayed true to herself,” why not lob that complaint at every politician? Yes, Trump is authentic. He is authentically terrible, and you don’t get points for being an openly terrible person, although I am grateful that he’s never tried to hide his hideousness.

But if you don’t like Clinton for the superficial reasons of her being clandestine and slightly manufactured, you need to grow up. I’m not saying Clinton’s going to be a great president. Frankly, I think she’s probably going to be a one-term President because Republicans will obstruct her for four years, say she didn’t accomplish anything, and people will go, “Yes! This genie I voted for didn’t make all my dreams come true!” We get the country we deserve, but as this video shows, Clinton deserves a bit better from us.
