FUTURAMA Getting Re-cast?

In news that has sent the interwebs into a frenzy, Forces of Geek and The Hollywood Reporter are saying that Fox has retreated to their usual douchy-selves and will be recasting the voice actors of “Futurama” because Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, and Maurice LaMarche.  It’s kind of surprising since they were all scheduled to appear at the “Futurama” panel at Comic-Con with show producers Matt Groening and David X. Cohen.  Hit the jump for more on this story.

In a statement from the studio earlier today, Fox said:

“We love the ‘Futurama’ voice performers and absolutely wanted to use them, but unfortunately, we could not meet their salary demands.  While replacing these talented actors will be difficult, the show must go on. We are confident that we will find terrific new performers to give voice to (creators) Matt (Groening) and David (Cohen)’s brilliantly subversive characters.”

Understandably, Comedy Central doesn’t have as much money as a network channel like Fox but when you’re cheaping out on the voice actors and going for sound-alikes, it’s a bad way to restart such a fiercely beloved show.

No word yet whether or not there will still be the “Futurama” panel at Comic-Con (currently schedule for Saturday at 1:00 PM in Ballroom 20) and if Groening and Cohen will be able to escape with their lives.

While this isn’t the first time this has happened in an animated show (and not the first time it’s happened with Billy West… anyone remember Doug) it’s worth noting, they’ve just replaced the voice actors for about 70% of the regular characters (percentage made up at random, but indicative of the truth).

Now they have to try and find a Fry who can also do Professor Farnsworth and Dr Zoidberg among others.

The best way for them to pull this off is to write it into the show and make jokes about it. My loyalty with the show lies more with the writers than the voices (cushy job if you can get it), and I think they’re creative enough make it work.

Disappointing but yeah it can be done well if good impersonators can be gotten.

For example in the Wallace and Gromit video games another voice actor is used rather than the well known British actor responsible for the voice in the movies & he does a very good job you can barely tell the difference.

Same with Family Guy though its the same voice actress see Lois voice in season 1 and 2 its very different compared to later seasons.
