At long last, it appears that Paramount Pictures has settled on a director for G.I. Joe 3. After undergoing a fairly successful reboot of the property with its second installment, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Paramount was eager to move forward quickly with a third installment. Retaliation helmer Jon M. Chu was attached to direct for a time, but he subsequently left to put together Jem and the Holograms. Since his departure, movement on G.I. Joe 3 has been slow. Producers met with Casino Royale director Martin Campbell about the job last fall, but those meetings never progressed into something tangible. Meetings with other directors continued, and Paramount has now zeroed in on the person who will most likely be spearheading this third installment: D.J. Caruso. More after the jump.
THR reports that Caruso is currently in talks to direct G.I. Joe 3, but cautions that a few things have to happen before a deal makes—including a meeting with Dwayne Johnson. The actor is now the face of the franchise as the character Roadblock, and is clearly involved in the creative direction of the series as well.
Caruso is a bit of a journeyman director whose credits include the 2002 film The Salton Sea, the Rear Window riff Disturbia, and 2008’s Eagle Eye. He made a stab at a franchise play with the 2011 sci-fi YA adaptation I Am Number Four, but that film was a commercial and critical failure and he hasn’t helmed anything as high profile since. Suffice it to say, he’s probably happy to take the G.I. Joe 3 job if the producers decide it’s a good fit. Caruso proved adept at handling a thriller tone with comedic elements in Disturbia and put together some suitable set pieces in I Am Number Four, so while I don’t think he’ll completely fail with G.I. Joe 3, I don’t really see the film materializing into anything particularly memorable. That said, I’d love nothing more than to be pleasantly surprised.
Caruso most recently wrapped the supernatural thriller The Disappointments Room starring Kate Beckinsale, which is set for release this September. G.I. Joe 3 doesn’t yet have a release date, but no doubt Paramount would love to get it in front of cameras this year. So far we still don’t know which characters (if any) from Retaliation will return, but we do know that this will be a Dwayne Johnson-led affair.
