With G.I. Joe: Retaliation now available on VOD and hitting Blu-ray/DVD next week, I was able to sit down with director Jon M. Chu last weekend for an exclusive video interview.  However, with Chu returning to direct G.I. Joe 3, I used a lot of my time talking about the next installment and what fans can expect.  Some of the highlights he told me were:

  • Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson are returning.
  • The release date is still being figured out.
  • Regarding the script, they’re currently “narrowing down the writer.”
  • On Retaliation, they learned that fans were okay with stretching things a little further, so now they can “double down on the adventure part of this movie.”  He cautions that they won’t go sci-fi, but they can “push the boundaries of the world a bit more.”
  • They’re not sure if they’re going to shoot in 3D and/or IMAX, but everything’s on the table.  Says there are some benefits to post-converting.
  • They learned on Retaliation that it’s hard to have a lot of characters, but it would be fun to see some new Joes joining the team.
  • I asked if he ever thought about combining the worlds of Transformers and G.I. Joe since they’re both owned by Hasbro. Says he would love to, as long as the reality of their worlds matches.

In addition to the highlights above, Chu talked a lot about what’s on the Retaliation Blu-ray, the legacy of G.I. Joe and how they can incorporate some of those things in the third film, working with Hasbro, Masters of the Universe, what he collects, and how he wants to hear from the fans regarding what they want to see in the third installment.  If you’re a G.I. Joe fan, I think you’ll really enjoy the interview.  Watch it after the jump.

tell this guy not to forget that the Eiffel tower and London no longer exist in the G.I Joe universe and if they keep to that level of destruction, by the time they get to a 6th or 7th installment -let’s presume it will- half the world will be gone.

I have to agree on the joking comment about getting rid of Bay. But you have 4 movies more or less done and get someone new and see how a fandom (thats what “Transfans” call it – don’t ask its a long story) reacts. Funny I would think. How about GI Joe Vs My Little Pony for even an more entertaining meltdown?

my god….. does he not realize how horrid Retaliation was? He’s almost as bad as Micchael Bay at this point. How do you make a sequel with almost NONE of the original characters in it?

and kill the ones that were in it

If you watched the original cartoons, characters came and went. Always remember the first rule of actions movies… if you didn’t see the body, don’t count on them being dead forever

Please… bring back Duke and the original team from the first film. They were so much better than the new team. And bring back Baroness and Destro. And if possible have Cobra Commander be the main villain this time instead of Zartan.

Why didn’t u ask if they would recast Scarlett?! A lot of us are pissed about it! U got 2 be shitting me right now! Retaliation was even worse. It doesn’t even look like it’s a G.I:joe, looks more like any action movie I’ve seen so far. They just used the names of the characters and played around with it…the 1st movie; I’m okay with but then shit started raining when they screwed around in the sequel! Are you people even doing your jobs right?! None of it makes sense! I cried when I watched the sequel, not because it was awesome as they said it was but because IT.WAS. FUCKING.TERRIBLE! I didn’t stop being a bitch about it since then…those responsible for the 3rd movie better get their shit together and not fuck things up. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ALMIGHTY, CAST SCARLETT BACK IN!!! They raised Storm shadow from the dead but can’t cast back some of the most crucial characters…what kind of G.I: joe does NOT have a COBRA COMANDER?! This sequel totally ruined my choldhood…
