Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a married couple who happen to be undercover spies. And while both deny infidelity on set, Jolie doesn’t deny that they fell in love. Pitt divorced Aniston, and the two co-stars got together.

Gigli - Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd

Gigli may have been savaged by critics and audiences, earning status as one of the worst movies ever made. But at least it provided the backdrop for a love connection between co-stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, prompting one of the best celeb couples names ever: Bennifer.

Just one problem: Lopez was married to dancer and choreographer Cris Judd at the time. Er, actually, it wasn’t that big of a problem after all, as Lopez divorced Judd less than one year into their marriage. She and Affleck were engaged five months after her divorce.

Proof of Life - Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan

You may not remember Proof of Life, the 2000 kidnapping thriller. But you might remember the scandal behind its stars, Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan. Onscreen, Crowe plays a negotiator trying to save Ryan’s husband.

Offscreen, a different story was unfolding.

At the time, Ryan was in a high-profile marriage with Dennis Quaid. But that didn’t stop her from hooking up with Crowe during shooting, which many eagle-eyed viewers thought messed with their onscreen chemistry. It also messed with Ryan’s marriage, as she and Quaid got divorced soon after.

Dream House - Darren Aronofsky and Rachel Weisz

Director Darren Aronofsky and actor Rachel Weisz were in a relationship for nine years. They got engaged and had a child together. They even made a movie together, the strange and polarizing The Fountain. So what stopped their seemingly dreamy relationship?

Why, a Dream House.

The underseen horror flick stars Weisz and Daniel Craig, a few years after he had become James Bond. The two had actually been good friends for awhile, even while Weisz and Aronofsky were together. But their experience making the movie made them realize they wanted more.

For fans of the Twilight film franchise, KPatz was forever. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, aka Bella and Edward, were the sparkly, star-crossed vampire lovers who set the world on fire with their on and off-screen romance.

But a poison apple was lurking for Stewart.

Director Rupert Sanders assembled a star-studded cast for Snow White and the Huntsman, his gritty take on the story, including Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Stewart. But he and Stewart couldn’t help tasting the forbidden fruit, getting together during production. Pattinson and Stewart broke up amidst the scandal.

The Rum Diary - Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis

Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp was with French singer Vanessa Paradis for 14 years. They had two children together, including actor Lily-Rose Depp. But on the production of The Rum Diary, he met actor Amber Heard, cast as his love interest. And all bets were off for Depp.

Depp and Heard began translating their on-screen romance into the real thing, which kinda got in the way of Depp’s relationship with Paradis. Once Depp transitioned into a marriage with Heard, things became volatile. Heard accused Depp of drug addiction and physical abuse, and the two got divorced in 2017.

Daredevil - Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez; Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley

Rising TV star Jennifer Garner was married to established TV star Scott Foley. Actor extraordinaire Ben Affleck was engaged to actor/singer extraordinaire Jennifer Lopez. And Daredevil, the pre-Netflix 2003 superhero adaptation, threw all four of their lives into a dang tailspin.

Affleck played Daredevil, the blind superhero with heightened sense. Garner played Elektra, the dagger-wielding enigma. And the two of them played “let’s hook up on set even though we’re both in high-profile relationships.” Both of their previous commitments dissolved, and they wound up getting married, becoming Bennifer 2.

House of Wax (2005) - Nick Carter and Paris Hilton; Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray

Paris Hilton and Nick Carter’s relationship was, to use a Hilton phrase, so hot. But do you know who else is hot? Chad Michael Murray. And in 2005, these two hotties appeared in the 2005 horror remake House of Wax. Melted wax -- also hot.

What happened with all this hotness?

Hilton said she no longer wanted it that way with Carter, and got together with Murray on set. Murray also ended a relationship -- his marriage with One Tree Hill costar Sophia Bush. The fling didn’t last, with Carter saying it was all a bad idea to begin with.

By the Sea (2015) - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

So you’re an unbelievably famous celebrity couple who got together under strange circumstances on a movie shoot. What do you do? If you’re Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, you fling yourselves into newly strange circumstances on a new movie shoot.

By the Sea, written and directed by Jolie, stars her and Pitt as, um, a married couple in the midst of an intense series of arguments that might result in breaking up. Jolie knew making this movie would test their marriage. Unfortunately, they wound up failing the test, getting divorced.

The Last Face - Sean Penn and Charlize Theron

Despite its star-studded pedigree (Sean Penn directing Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem), nobody liked The Last Face, a 2016 drama. It has a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was dumped to DirectTV’s streaming service. But that’s not its worst tragedy: It also ruined Penn and Theron’s relationship.

They got engaged in 2014, and began shooting The Last Face that same year. But the film’s production was so rough, and the couple’s frictions occurred so often, that they broke up one year later, after shooting had wrapped.

That must’ve been quite the awkward movie to promote.

Gone Girl - Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

Ben Affleck just can’t get it together, can he? During his marriage to Jennifer Garner, he nabbed the lead role in Gone Girl, David Fincher’s twisty tale of infidelity and revenge. And he allegedly got too close to one co-star, causing Garner to become a “gone girl” herself.

Apparently, Affleck personally asked for Emily Ratajkowski to play a pivotal role in Gone Girl -- the other woman in his onscreen relationship with Rosamund Pike. And apparently, Affleck and Ratajkowski had some “other woman” moments during production. This, among other issues, caused Garner to file for divorce in 2017.

The Break-Up - Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn

Soon after her high-profile breakup with Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston starred in what was likely a therapeutic role in The Break-Up, a dramedy about a couple that, well, breaks up. Her co-star? Vince Vaughn, who had just appeared in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the movie that broke up Aniston’s marriage.

Aniston and Vaughn soon began dating. However, the relationship wound up being a brief rebound, and they broke up soon after. Vaughn said there was just too much public attention on their relationship, but Aniston had no hard feelings, despite the whole experience’s minefield of messed up relationship triggers.

Rosemary’s Baby - Mia Farrow and Frank Sinatra

Is making a movie worth divorce? Especially if that divorce is with one of the greatest musicians of all time? For Mia Farrow, who was in the middle of making horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, the answer was yes -- no matter how it made her now-ex-husband Frank Sinatra feel.

As Farrow wrote in her autobiography What Falls Away, filming on Rosemary’s Baby was going roughly. And Sinatra wanted Farrow to leave the movie, as its prolonged shooting schedule was getting in the way of their relationship. Farrow refused. And Sinatra gave Farrow divorce papers on set. Whoa.

Silence - Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone

Meeting on set of the Amazing Spider-Man films, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield had a picture-perfect romance. As in, “the pictures paparazzi took of them on dates were perfect, because they would deliberately mess with them.” It wound up taking Silence to silence their relationship.

Martin Scorsese’s Silence was a passion project for the director, and leading actor Garfield was eager to give it his all. He threw himself into the character, losing a scary amount of weight in the process. Stone, tired of Garfield’s method actor madness, broke up with him.

Cleopatra (1963) - Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor’s Marriages

The story of Cleopatra is the stuff of Hollywood legend. Lavish sets, ballooning budgets, and insane egos resulted in a massively fractured production that nearly bankrupted its studio. Amidst all this turmoil, stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton found love -- at a cost.

At the time, Taylor was on her fourth marriage, to singer Eddie Fisher. And Burton was married to actor Sybil Christopher. Both Burton and Taylor abruptly divorced their spouses to marry while filming Cleopatra. And they wound up getting divorced in 1974, remarrying in 1975, and divorcing again in 1976.

Eyes Wide Shut - Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

It was quite the Hollywood love triangle: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, and… Stanley Kubrick? For his last movie, Eyes Wide Shut, the legendary filmmaker chose the it couple of the moment as his main characters. Cruise and Kidman played a bored couple prone to arguing and, eventually, “experimenting.”

Everything about the shoot was controversial and hounded by the tabloids, from its explicit content to its dissection of a relationship everyone thought they knew. The pressure, coupled with Kubrick’s unexpected death, became too much for the couple, which led in part to their divorce two years later.

Titanic - James Cameron and Linda Hamilton

Filmmaker James Cameron fell in love with his muse, Linda Hamilton, during the filming of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. They dated during the shoot and got married in 1997. And then, Cameron found a new muse: Actor Suzy Amis, whom he had cast in a little movie called Titanic.

Cameron, still married to Hamilton, began dating Amis while filming his doomed boat epic. And this choice effectively doomed his marriage to Hamilton, who announced her divorce to Cameron just eight days after Titanic won all of its Oscars. Cameron and Amis wound up marrying in 2000.

Pushing Tin - Laura Dern and Billy Bob Thornton

Laura Dern and Billy Bob Thornton were engaged to be married after a fruitful relationship from 1997 until 1999. And then Thornton was cast in a film called Pushing Tin alongside an actor named Angelina Jolie. Suddenly, Dern had a rude awakening to reckon with.

Thornton abruptly ended his engagement with Dern to get with Jolie. And we mean abrupt -- Dern found out secondhand that Thornton and Jolie were eloping, without Thornton ever telling her himself. Thornton and Jolie’s relationship was wild, too.

Like, “wearing vials of each other’s blood” wild.

Nymphomaniac - Shia LaBeouf and Karolyn Pho

Based on the title alone, you can likely guess the main subject of Nymphomaniac. And the “adults only” vibe of the material and shoot seemed to rub off on star Shia LaBeouf, who ended a long term relationship with stylist Karolyn Pho for an on-set rendezvous.

Mia Goth made her film debut in Nymphomaniac, and she and LaBeouf have a particularly intense onscreen “moment.” The two decided to turn this moment into a long-term romance, as they began dating while filming. Eventually, they got married in 2016, via Las Vegas Elvis wedding.

Green Lantern - Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds

In 2011, Scarlett Johansson had just begun playing Black Widow in the MCU. And her husband, Ryan Reynolds, wanted a piece of that superhero pie. So he nabbed the title role in Green Lantern. While the movie was hated by audiences, it did bring something new into Reynolds’ life.

Blake Lively played Carol Ferris, the Green Lantern’s love interest. And the two got along so well during production, that they decided to trade Green Lantern’s famous ring for a wedding ring. After, you know, Reynolds and Johansson’s surprise divorce. Talk about a Thanos-level destruction.

mother! - Darren Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence made a name for herself appearing in big-budget crowd-pleasing franchises like the X-Men and Hunger Games. Then, in 2017, she starred in mother!, a bonkers, polarizing film directed by her new boyfriend, director Darren Aronofsky.

The process of making the movie, apparently, was a real mother.

In the movie, Lawrence is stalked and terrorized by a group of increasingly murderous strangers in a big house. Yikes, right?

It was such an ordeal for the couple, and Aronofsky became so obsessed with the audience’s perception of the movie, that Lawrence had to call it quits.

Layer Cake - Jude Law and Sienna Miller

Let’s be fair. In 2005, Jude Law absolutely cheated on his fiance Sienna Miller with their nanny. But in 2004, Miller absolutely cheated on her fiance Law with her Layer Cake co-star, Daniel Craig.

Talk about a Layer Cake of infidelity.

After these double affairs broke up their pending marriage, Miller had another affair with married actor Balthazar Getty. Then, Law and Miller rekindled their relationship while starring in separate Broadway shows in 2009. But by 2011, they were done again.

Stage Beauty - Billy Crudup and Mary-Louise Parker

Here comes a rough one.

Billy Crudup and Mary-Louise Parker were in a seven-year-strong relationship. Parker was seven months pregnant with Crudup’s child. And Crudup abruptly broke things off with Parker to be with his Stage Beauty co-star, Claire Danes, who was 11 years younger than him.

Crudup and Danes met on the set of 2004’s Stage Beauty, a drama set in the world of Shakespearean theatre. And their two-year relationship broke Parker’s heart. However, she still named her son William, after his dad. Parker wound up writing about the ordeal in her memoir, Dear Mr. You.

To Have and Have Not - Humphrey Bogart and Mayo Methot

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall go together like Los and Angeles. They even have a fun nickname: Bogey and Bacall. But during the filming of their onscreen debut, To Have and Have Not, there were real world consequences that came to a head.

Bogart was a married, 45-year-old Hollywood vet. Bacall was a single, 18-year-old model making her film debut. And the two fell head over heels, surprising crew members with their on-set tomfoolery. Bogart divorced his wife, the troubled actor Mayo Methot, and he and Bacall were married until his death.

Planet of the Apes (2001) - Tim Burton and Lisa Marie

Tim Burton and Lisa Marie were a match made in weirdo heaven. The unique director even cast Marie in some scene-stealing cameos. When Burton remade Planet of the Apes in 2001, he continued the tradition by casting Marie. But he upended everything when he fell in love with another actor.

Helena Bonham Carter played Ari, a rebellious ape who falls in love with Mark Wahlberg’s human character. And Burton was struck by her, ending his relationship with Marie to pursue her. The two then entered a long romantic and professional relationship, from 2001 until 2014.

Days of Thunder - Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers

When we think of high profile Tom Cruise relationships, we think of Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman. But he was married before Kidman, to actor Mimi Rogers. And his transition from Rogers to Kidman was as speedy as the race car he drove in Days of Thunder.

Kidman and Cruise were cast as lovers in that driving drama. And when they met, they quickly developed an attraction they couldn’t ignore. Cruise and Rogers were divorced the same year Cruise and Kidman started filming Days of Thunder, 1989.

And for Christmas that year, Cruise got Kidman an engagement ring.

The Misfits - Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe’s life was filled with personal struggle and tragedy. Her last completed film, 1961’s The Misfits, represented a potentially intriguing turn for her, as it was more complex than her other work. Unfortunately, it also caused her marriage to the film’s screenwriter, the legendary Arthur Miller, to fall apart.

Both Monroe and Miller were openly cheating on each other -- Miller’s mistress was even living with him. On-set, Monroe was acting erratic due to drug abuse, and Miller was constantly rewriting pages. All of this became too much to bear for the couple, who divorced quickly after production wrapped.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein - Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson

For fans of classy, British actors, Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh were the perfect couple. They made Shakespeare adaptations (Much Ado About Nothing) and weird horror flicks (Dead Again) together, and generally seemed charming in that very British way.

Until Helena Bonham Carter came along and changed everything.

While directing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in 1994, Branagh cast Carter as Dr. Frankenstein’s wife. Branagh was playing Dr. Frankenstein. Do you see where this is going? Thompson unfortunately didn’t, and divorced Branagh when she discovered the affair. Branagh and Carter stayed together for five years.

Stop-Loss - Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon

1999 was a huge year for young couple Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe. The rising stars both got married and co-starred in suggestive classic Cruel Intentions. But then, eight years later, their partnership was all over, due in part to a relationship Phillippe started while filming Stop-Loss.

The Iraq War drama stars Phillippe as a recent veteran suffering from PTSD, and Abbie Cornish as Channing Tatum’s fiancée. The two had an on-set attraction, bumping up against Phillippe’s marriage to Witherspoon. Eventually, Witherspoon filed for divorce, and Phillippe dated Cornish for three years.

Honey Boy - Shia LaBeouf and Mia Goth

Shia LaBeouf wrote the script for Honey Boy about his troubled life and relationship with his father. He actually plays the character based on his dad. Pop star FKA Twigs plays the curiously named Shy Girl, a love interest for the character based on LaBeouf.
