Now that Channing Tatum has finished negotiating in the press and is confirmed to star in Rupert Wyatt’s Gambit, the film is looking for its lead actress. We previously reported that Tatum had been reading with Blue Is the Warmest Color star Lea Seydoux, and Deadline confirms that she’s in the running along with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation breakthrough star Rebecca Ferguson and Mad Max: Fury Road co-star Abbey Lee.

The three actresses are up for the role of Belladonna Boudreaux aka Bella. In the comics, she was Gambit’s love interest, and also a member of the Assassins’ Guild. Gambit, who was a member of the Thieves’ Guild, was betrothed to Bella in order to prevent war between their families. Eventually, Bella gained superpowers of her own, and it will be interesting to see how the movie portrays her character.

Personally, I hope that Ferguson doesn’t get the role only because she’s done her co-lead, and now it’s time for her to have her own franchise. She can clearly hold her own, and while all three actresses are talented, this would probably be a step back for her.

Gambit opens October 7, 2016.
