While X-Men: Apocalypse's premiere feels like ages ago now, forward movement on the X-Men universe continues. A number of superhero films are in development over at 20th Century Fox that take place within the same universe, some further along than others, but probably the one folks are most excited for is Deadpool 2. We know the movie is officially happening, as Fox confirmed that director Tim Miller, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and of course star Ryan Reynolds are all returning. But despite a fanmade poster that made the rounds the other day, Fox has yet to confirm a release date.

However, there’s now some clarity on the X-Men front courtesy of Simon Kinberg, who’s really the keeper of the keys when it comes to all things X-Men. The folks at That Hashtag Show caught up with Kinberg at the Saturn Awards recently, and the writer/producer not only doubly confirmed the targeted filming date of Deadpool 2, but he also teased a new X-Men movie:

“The first thing up, we’re shooting the Wolverine movie right now and we start shooting Deadpool 2 at the beginning of next year, then I sit down and start writing the next of the mainline X-Men movies.”

But there’s another X-Men movie that folks have been curious about, and that’s Gambit. The spinoff has been in development for the past two years, with Channing Tatum attaching himself to star and filming set to get underway last fall with director Rupert Wyatt. However, shortly before production was poised to begin, Wyatt dropped out of the project and the filming date pushed. Edge of Tomorrow helmer Doug Liman was subsequently tapped to direct, but filming was pushed significantly in order for screenwriter Reid Carolin (Tatum’s partern and the scribe behind Magic Mike) to further hone the script. Kinberg maintains that Gambit is still on track and is now aiming to get in front of cameras in 2017:

“We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of spring of next year.”

The significant delay on that likely has to do with Tatum’s very busy schedule, as well as Liman’s who now may be squeezing in two movies before Gambit, assuming he’s still attached.

We should be hearing release date news on the Deadpool 2 front any day now, and New Mutants is still in active development, but Hugh Jackman’s last go-around as Wolverine is firmly barreling towards its March 3, 2017 release date.
