I love beer, I love television, and I love creative cross-over marketing, so today's bit of offbeat news is my holy trinity.  Some of these brews have been around for a while and others are being released this very weekend!  Here they are at a glance:

  • Game of Thrones - Ommegang Brewery has already churned out the Iron Throne blonde ale, and the Take the Black Stout for past seasons of HBO's hit show, but their latest effort, Fire and Blood red ale, will release on March 31st.  Season four debuts Sunday April 6th.
  • Star Trek - The first official Star Trek beer, Klingon Warnog, will be brewed by the Indiana-based Tin Man Brewing Co.  You can only drink this dunkelweizen if you've successfully performed the Rite of Ascension and endured torture by painstiks.
  • The Walking Dead - Just in time for the season four finale of AMC's hit series is this new brainy brew from Dock Street Brewing Co. in Philly.  This Walker's an American Pale Stout brewed with smoked goat brains. YUP!

Hit the jump for more information on each of these delicious drinks.

Game of Thrones via Ommegang

FIRE AND BLOOD:

Ommegang and HBO® announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones® collaboration series. Through its first three seasons, the critically acclaimed drama has become the biggest show on HBO.

Named after the motto of House Targaryen, Fire and Blood is inspired by Daenerys Targaryen and her three dragons, Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion. To celebrate the rebirth of dragons, three different labels were created by the Game of Thrones visual effects specialists, each depicting one of Daenerys' feared dragons. Randomly distributed amongst the cases, each case will contain all three bottles.

On sale March 31, in time for the debut of Season 4, Fire and Blood makes for the perfect season premiere pairing. The beer is available in 750ml bottles and 1/6 barrel kegs.

Star Trek via Hero Complex:

Klingon Warnog will be brewed by the Evansville, Ind.-based Tin Man Brewing Co. According to the announcement, the dunkelweizen style beer has an aroma that is “predominantly mild banana and clove” that is “supported by subtle sweet malt character from the use of Munich malt.”

The beer’s flavor “draws heavily from the blending of the rye malt and traditional clove character” and includes wheat and caramel malts. Making the 5.5% ABV Roggen Dunkel something strong enough for a surly Klingon to quaff.

The Walking Dead via Dock Street Brewing Co.

Presenting Dock Street Walker, quite possible the smartest beer you’ll ever drink!

Only two things in life are certain: Craft Beer and Zombies.  Kind of.  As avid enthusiasts of both, Dock Street Brewery combined their obsessive passion for brewing with their admiration for the finest zombie drama to date.  Behold their liquid tribute, Dock Street Walker, an American Pale Stout brewed with wheat, oats, flaked barley, organic cranberry, and Smoked Goat Brains!

Dock Street Walker is the brainchild (pun intended) of Head Brewer Justin Low and Brewery Representative Sasha Certo-Ware, both loyal fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead.  More often than not, monotonous Monday cleaning rituals (labors of love for brewers everywhere) were spent recapping the previous night’s twists, turns, narrow escapes, or untimely goodbyes.  Dock Street wanted to brew a special tribute to the show.  “Screw it, let’s use brains!”

Dock Street Walker (7.2% ABV) is an American Pale Stout, brewed with substantial amounts of malted wheat, oats, and flaked barley for a smooth, creamy mouthfeel.  Fuggle hops provide delicate, earthy notes, while the cranberries create a sinister, bloody hue, adding a slight tartness.  The pre-sparge-brain-addition provides this beer with intriguing, subtle smoke notes.  In true walker fashion, don’t be surprised if its head doesn’t hang around forever.

While Dock Street has earned local, national, and international praise for many of its traditional styles like their Rye IPARoyal Bohemian Pilsner, and Amber Ale, making waves is familiar ground to Philadelphia's first microbrewery.  Their growing portfolio of Reinheitsgebot-taunting brews includes Sexy Beast, Truffled Old AleSatellite Espresso StoutNino’s Prickly Pears, and Spanglish Fly, a biere de garde brewed with wormwood, yarrow, and ginger.

Gourmet mushrooms and potentially hallucinogenic herbs are one thing, but smoked brains… really?  Believe it or not, much of the world considers brain to be a true delicacy.  Think Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but not ridiculous.  Many also believe that using every part of an animal not only increases and encourages sustainability, but also honors the animal’s life and death.

Dock Street will be releasing this brainy new brew on March 30th.  Join us at 7pm for live music from acoustic funky filth band Face and the Filthies, goblets of this never before done brew, and a screening of The Walking Dead Season Finale.  Growlers will be available for those who’d rather drink their brains out at home.  Eff the Governor.
