If you needed another reason to believe that Game of Thrones is cinematic television, two episodes of the popular HBO series will be headed to IMAX screens. Previous episodes have been shown in regular movie theaters (I saw the Season 4 premiere last year at the Atlanta Film Festival), but this is the first time a television series will be presented in IMAX.
According to Deadline, two episodes from Season 4 have been remastered in IMAX, and will play from January 23rd – 29th. There’s no word yet on which two episodes will be going large format, but I predict one of them will be the season’s big battle episode, “The Watchers on the Wall”. The two episodes will also be followed by a trailer for Season 5. Hit the jump for more.
Per Deadline, HBO says screening and ticket information will be revealed soon, and I imagine these tickets will go quickly, not only because of the unique experience, but because Game of Thrones is easily one of the most popular shows on television. It was the most-searched for show on Google last year, the most talked-about show on Facebook, and the most-pirated series of 2014.
I’ll be curious to see how well Game of Thrones does on IMAX because they’re asking fans to come out and pay a premium ticket prices to see two episodes they’ve already seen. If the experiment is a success, I assume HBO will repeat it, and maybe even go so far as to release an episode in IMAX before it airs on television.
“The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” said Pamela Levine [via Deadline], HBO’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show, and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.”
