With winter having arrived, the second season of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones is only a few short months away. As the new tagline is “Cold Winds Are Rising,” you can rest assured that the royalty will be dressed for frigid temperatures as well as function. That’s where Michele Clapton and Simon Brindle come in. They’re the costume designer and costume armor supervisor respectively and they were tasked with making the outfits in Game of Thrones both realistic and uniquely fashionable. In the case of Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony), Clapton had this to say:

“With Renly, it was interesting, because we wanted to do this sort of armor covered in velvet. We wanted to give him some more fullness and stature, but without being too obvious about it.”

Hit the jump to check out a better look at the young lord’s armor. Season 2 of Game of Thrones is set to debut on April 15th.

Brindle commented on both the fun and complexity of working on Renly’s armor:

“It was great fun, actually, but it was quite an involved piece. I think in his costume alone there’s something like 800 individual strips of metal just in one jacket and a little over 4,000 rivets. When you throw the arms and the skirts into that, it almost doubles.”

As Renly is one of a few lords (or ladies) laying claim to the throne, he’ll need more than just flashy duds to survive the season. Anthony himself describes the armor as such:

“He’s still doing it with style, he attires himself in armor that has flare. But he’s ready for war and if anyone has a go at him, he’s ready for it.”
