Character List for GAME OF THRONES Season Three Revealed; Season Will Cover Half of A STORM OF SWORDS

     May 29, 2012

With just one episode left in the stellar second season of HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones, fans are already eager to get the third season on the move. Of course, it will be months before the third season hits the air (April 2013, to be exact), fans of the book series by George R.R. Martin will see the stories spread out over a longer period of time as the third novel A Storm of Swords is being divided into two seasons. Now we have a bit of information on just which characters from the book will make it into the series next season. Find a character list after the jump!

game-of-thrones-a-storm-of-swordsEW has a list of new characters who will be introduced in the third season to add to the already hefty line-up from the first two seasons. The list only contains some brief descriptions, so for those who haven’t read the books, this will only scratch the surface. Here’s the list:

  • Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.
  • Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.
  • Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.
  • Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.
  • Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.
  • Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.
  • Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.
  • Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.
  • Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.
  • Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.
  • Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.

This list comes straight from showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and they point out that there are even more characters from the book not listed here that are likely to show up in the third season as well. However, for those worried about having too many characters to follow on an already crowded series, Benioff and Weiss say,

“It’s important to point out that that we have the largest cast on television right now. We introduced dozens of new characters in season two. If you hurl 300 characters at an audience, the story collapses under the weight of too many faces, too many names, and too many subplots. We need to be just as mindful of the audience members who have never read the books as we are of the readers; the series will fail if we only appeal to those who already know the characters. So we try to be parsimonious about how many new roles we introduce to the story and when we introduce them.”

So while there will be plenty of characters in the mix, we may not see all of them often enough to make the season feel crowded. Either way, there’s going to be a lot going on next season, so it’s clear why the third book is being split into two separate seasons.

Sounds like the Season 3 finale will be the Red Wedding. Makes sense.

    I dread it.

    • Tj!

I agree, but at the same time I’m looking forward to the reactions of the fans of the show who have yet to read the books. After book 3 I was drained…my favorite of the series by far and the season I’ve been looking forward to since the show began. I always tell people “Just wait till season three. Just wait…”

      • Stinky

The mid-point and end of Swords makes Ned Stark losing his head look like Theon feeling up his sister.

        Or something like that.

    • Carlos Rincones

      I agree too.

Jojen Reed, Meera Reed, Beric, Thoros, all them yeahhhhh!

    • thomas

how do know what the season finale is?

  • Gilad

Dream casting: Olenna Redwyne – Maggie Smith, Mance Rayder – Vego Mortensen.

Sounds about right, Stinky, and probably them moving some of the unnecessary plot threads to season 4, like Brienne and Jaime. SPOILER Still curious how he loses his hand with Vargo Hoat written out so far. /END SPOILER

    • Gilad

According to Elio & Linda from Vargo Hoat and Ramsay Bolton are also in season 3.
(Accidently reposted my dream casting from above because I thought it didn’t work the first time.. my bad)

    • Stinky

The Brienne/Jamie thread could be condensed. Hopefully the Arya stuff, too. Not that it’s bad. Just looooooooooong.

As for Jamie’s, er, troubles… I’m sure they’ll figure it out.

Some of the best shit goes down in the Eyrie though. Nice to finally figure out how this whole story started.

Swords has a wicked cliffhanger (or two). Best book of the series.

For those that haven’t read it, don’t track down any spoilers. Check the book. Well worth it.

i only care about who’s going to play Val

  • SW

I think Viggo Mortensen could be realistic considering the were able to get Sean Bean, and no one of that calibur has been casted since.

  • SW

I think Vego Mortensen is the perfect choice. And he wouldn’t half to sign on the show for 8 years. Also would be the biggest addition to the cast since Sean Bean.

No Reek? Oh well, he’s bound to be in the season at some point.. Now just keep us apprised of the casting info! I’m super excited to see who will play Mance and the Tully’s.

  • Yoren

Man I really want them to add strong Belwas to the story he adds some brutal comic relief. I love how how he lets every man he kills cut him once so other people will know how many men he has killed.

  • thomas

why do we have to wait until apirl 2013 for the thrird season

  • Stinky

Vego would be cool, but I kind of hope they don’t cast him.

First, we already have a LotR connection with Bean.

Next, the rest of the cast are relatively low-key. Peter Dinklage and Lena Headley are the only actors I’ve heard of prior to season 1. Look how well this show was cast with out huge names.

With an ever-growing cast and strong core, why bring in a headliner that could steal the spotlight.
