Trailer for Next Week’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Teases Another Epic Showdown

     May 6, 2019

HBO has released the trailer for Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5, also known as the second-to-last episode of Game of Thrones ever. Traditionally, it’s the penultimate episode of the season where things get turned up to 11. In Season 1’s “Baelor,” Ned Stark lost his head; in Season 2’s “Blackwater,” Tyrion became a war hero; in Season 3’s “The Rains of Castamere,” everyone died. So it stands to reason that in the penultimate episode of the final season of the show, some crazy twist or major death is in store.

Fittingly, then, this trailer offers nothing in the way of dialogue. Instead, the trailer showcases a bevy of ominous imagery like Tyrion considering his allegiance to Dany or Euron Greyjoy (aka The Living Worst) looking fearfully up in the sky. Will Tyrion turn on Dany and back Jon Snow for the Iron Throne? Will Cersei unveil yet another sadistic secret plot that results in lots of murders? Will Euron Greyjoy just die already? Plenty of questions, and answers lie only a week away.

It’s also curious that this season dispatched with the show’s fantastical element—the White Walkers—halfway through the season, so now we’re just left with the human intrigue surrounding the Iron Throne. On that note, the show is setting up Dany to be an untrustworthy and impulsive leader and Jon to be a reluctant leader (as is his destiny). Do we really want either of these people on the Iron Throne though? Can we just give it to Sansa already?

As I said, lots of questions remain, but only two episodes are left in the story of Game of Thrones. Hold on to your butts.
