Game of Thrones: Season 5 held back on its big, VFX material until the end of the season, but when it unleashed its set pieces, they had everyone talking. The zombie battle in “Hardhome” was magnificent, but a close second was Daenerys flying away on a Dragon at the end of “The Dance of Dragons.” The dragons are arguably the show’s signature visual effect, used sparingly and used well, and “Dance of Dragons” pulled out all the stops for its climactic scene.

Wired has released a VFX video that shows what went into making the scene, and it’s a reminder that the show utilizes visual effects on both a massive and minor scale, so while your attention might be drawn to the giant CG dragon, don’t forget the CG crowd, sets, etc. There’s a reason the show is so expensive and why a majority is just two people talking in a single location.
