Warner Bros. has released the first featurette for director Ruben Fleischer’s crime drama Gangster Squad.  The movie is set in 1940s Los Angeles and stars Sean Penn as real-life gangster Mickey Cohen, who became the target of special task force known as the “Gangster Squad”.  The featurette is fairly short, but it highlights bits of new footage interspersed with the cast and Fleischer talking about the allure of gangster films.  Titles like The Godfather and The Untouchables are name-dropped, and Fleischer says that his goal with Gangster Squad was to make a gangster film for a new generation.

Hit the jump to watch the featurette.  The film also stars Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni Ribisi.  Gangster Squad opens on January 11th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Gangster Squad:

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

The Godfather-trilogy: Brando, Pacino, De Niro, Duvall, Keaton, Garcia, Coppola, etc.
The Untouchables: De Niro, Connery, Costner, Garcia, De Palma, Morricone, etc.
Gangster Squad: Penn, Brolin, Gosling, Stone, Fleischer, Jay-Z, etc.

Gangster Squad can’t be compared to The Godfather or The Untouchables.

I’ll just save myself some time and watch L.A. Conffidential, The Untouchables, Mulholland Falls, and Dick Tracy instead.

Scarface was the last great gangster film for a generation. And it wasn’t set in the 1940′s…
