A new trailer for director Ruben Fleischer’s crime drama Gangster Squad has been released.  I was interested in checking out Gangster Squad before the reshoots forced the release date to be pushed back and this trailer hasn’t swayed me one way or the other.  Sean Penn looks positively fierce as gangster Mickey Cohen, but Josh Brolin appears hard-boiled enough to take him on.  Ryan Gosling plays it almost too cool for school, bordering on emotionless, and leading lady Emma Stone is just too innocent to make convincing arm candy for a gangster (I'm talking Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface type of girl here).  Penn will dominate his scenes, but I’m interested to see what dramatic turns Gosling and Stone have in store for us.Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni Ribisi.  Gangster Squad opens on January 11th.Click over to Appleto watch in HD.Here’s the synopsis for Gangster Squad:

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.
