The first set photos from director Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland) period crime drama Gangster Squad have hit the net. While they aren’t really images of any scenes being shot, we do get our first look at Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin in their period garb. The film takes place in 1940’s Los Angeles, where the police force has been corrupted by notorious gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). A group of cops not under Cohen’s grasp put together a task force known as the “Gangster Squad” in order to take their city back. The all-star cast includes Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Michael Peña, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Mireille Enos, Holt McCallany, Robert Patrick, and Giovanni Ribisi.

Here’s the official synopsis for Gangster Squad:
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

nice Red polo from Gosling. looks like it won’t be those period piece gangster flicks where cops and gangsters only wear grey or yellow clothes(kind of like The Untouchables). it’s refreshing a non bleak period gangster flick.
Wow. I’d pick a lot of movies before referencing The Untouchables. Having just re-watched it recently, that was one of the most stylized gangster films ever made (outside of a comic strip film like Dick Tracy).
