The first trailer for director Ruben Fleischer‘s (Zombieland) crime drama Gangster Squad has gone online. The film stars Sean Penn as gangster Mickey Cohen, and centers on the Los Angeles task force (headed by Josh Brolin) assembled to bring him to justice.  I’m a sucker for anything 1940s-related, but I think this trailer is pretty damn great.  The cast is incredible, and Fleischer’s visual flair from his previous films looks to have matured and evolved for this more dramatic story.  Above all, though, Gangster Squad looks like a lot of fun.  It’s easy for period pieces like this to be drowned by solemnity (I’m looking at you, Public Enemies), but Fleischer hasn’t forgotten that there’s a lot of fun to be had in 1940s L.A.  Additionally, I’m loving the different personalities on display in the ensemble.  Between this, Argo, and the slew of movies slated for this fall/winter, 2012 is shaping up to be something special.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni RibisiGangster Squad opens later this year.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

    Daym.

  • Emania

    Great cast

  • Jim

I know I’ll get crushed for this but Ryan Gosling sounds incredibly wooden in the trailer. Really terrible.

That being said I loved LA Confidential, I hope this can come close.

    • Jazzy Jace

I don’t think Gosling sounds wooden at all, perhaps he’s evoking that speak-easy technique from the era? How many people knew Nic Cage was doing an Adam West impression in Kick-Ass before the penny dropped?

    • Guns Of Navarone

I agree, he’s carried over his voice from Drive. It wouldn’t hurt the guy to mix it up a bit.

  • Ivan

Is Ryan Gosling crying the whole movie? His voice was annoying.

  • Satchmocoltrane

I don’t know, in my opinion, this is too overtly stylized it kinda makes me think 300 – LA confidential hybrid which I don’t feel is needed. Lots of great actors though but this compared to the Lawless trailer? Lawless without a doubt.

    • Sara

I felt that too. I don’t know,… I am from Brasil, films only get here if they are successful at box office in USA.

  • Carlos

Gosling’s voice sounds incredibly gay in this.

    • Bryce Forestieri

Hateful homophobic comments should be banned and you should be smacked punk. Keep it classy collider

      • Carlos

It’s not meant to be homophobic, that’s just what it sounds like. Or do you think I’m wrong?

      • Jazzy Jace

@ Carlos: Yes, you’re wrong, buddy. Those comments are plain stupid.

      • Matthew

        naaaah, it sounds pretty gay

    • e2r

Guy honestly has little range, too much people expecting him to be this generations Brad Pitt, that won’t happen trust me

  • George

What’s the song in the backend of the trailer?

    • Vickthur

      Jay-Z – Oh My God

  • Evan

Lawless – intense, powerful Depression Era crime film

    GS – stylized, uniquely-shot, fun

Both different approaches. Both can be good.

  • Adamclitwood Sucksdick

Fucking sick of these Collider retards always bashing Public Enemies while sucking dick to all these mainstream “fun” popcorn flicks. Always getting all giddy over mainstream bullshit.

Rather watch Lawless, shot digitally TO ACTUALLY LOOK DIGITAL like Public Enemies for a grittier immediate feel. Fucking sick of all these same cookie cutter directors who think just because a movie takes place in the 30′s-40′s that they have to make it nostalgic and dripping with over-color correction. Fleischer also shot on ALEXA and copped out to just making it look like any other film.

Enjoy your cookie cutter wet dreams you Collider faggots.

    • Sugreev2001

I absolutely agree.I loved Public Enemies, bought the DVD infact.

    • treet

Love Public Enemies and in all seriousness don’t expect anything (wuth similar plot) matching it in style. poise, music, action sequences in this hd age. Mann is a legitimate auteuer and is for decades in the business and takes plenty of time to thought out stuff up.

And on the other hand who can take serieously a fratboy who puts rap music into 40s movie.

  • Adam Isaretard

No retard, Public ENemies and Lawless are much better than this cookie cutter bs. Stop sucking dick to all these popcorn movies you Collider faggots.

    • JP

So I’m guessing you got to see advanced screenings of Lawless and Gangster Squad. How were they?

    • mattinacan

you should be beat within an inch of your life… then an inch more

  • wacko3205

Everyone’s entitled to an opinion…but I just aint feelin’ Ryan Goslin…& not just in this. I’ve been trying for the better part of a decade to let myself be “swayed” as everyone else is over this glorious chap…but he always looks like he just woke up & that he’s half as interested in whatever he’s in than the rest of the cast.

I liked DRIVE…but oddly enough I enjoyed it for the supporting cast more than Goslin. I just don’t get it. Just aint feeling the guy.

Anywho…looks decent enough…but nuttin but nuttin touches the Untouchables…& this looks like its tryin.

Josh Brolin and Sean Penn appear invested in this one.

    High hopes.

  • Deepak

Looks like a cross between Untouchables and LA Confidential. A good movie and a masterpiece — hopefully this falls somewhere in between (at least).

  • junierizzle

Geez, not every movie has to be witty and have popcorn style fun. This is the kinda stuff we need more of, just straight up gangsta.

  • James

It looks like it could be fun. I really could have did WITHOUT the Jay-Z song at the end. WTF?

    • Anon

Its not really WTF its smart, they wanna appeal to the ‘ganster rap’ folks to get them into the theatre, even tho its ‘white’ gangster they would still enjoy a bit of criminal vio9lence

      • SP1234

True, American Gangster used a Jay-Z song in the trailer and most of that film featured 70s source music.

      • James

I know what your saying. I just didn’t think it was a necessary. Doesn’t fit with the film to me.

      • James

As for American Gangster, the film inspired Jay-Z to make an album with the same title. Each track was inspired by specific scenes in the film. So thats a little different and was why his song was so prominent in the trailer, it fitted the tone of the movie. This to me doesn’t work with The Gangster Squad.

    • Tom

granted there are exceptions, but for the most part, movies with rap songs in the trailer suck ass. just go down the list. like i said, there are a few exceptions, and i hope this is one, but i hate that jay-z’s in the trailer

  • SP1234

I never thought I would say this, but that theater shoot-out looks scarier than Inglourious Basterds! LOL!

  • Leah

Wow, this does NOT look good. Ryan Gosling trying to be a tough guy…I’m just not buying it.

    • mattinacan

are you on crack? did you see Drive?

    • kyle

Yo Ryan Gosling is obviously playing the pretty boy/ bad boy member of the group. Thats why his voice sounds high, but other then that he just sounds like a dude from back then. The accent he is using sounds like people from that ERA. You people are crazy.

P.S. people who don’t think gosling is a good actor go watch half Nelson or Lars and the Real Girl.

  • EBFan

What’s with the Gosling hate? Everyone is showering him in praises and the next day they go “Oh, he looks terrible.” That is so fake.

  • valentine

what’s with all the Gosling haters? This will be a date movie guy’s will want to watch.

  • Matty

    The writing sounds plain lousy.

    “You gotta die of something.”
    “There’s no going back.”
    “I’m not a cop anymore.”

Pretty sure I’ve heard these lines elsewhere. And done better.

And Gosling does not cut it.

    • 90ina30

      HAHAHAHA…….yep…….screenplay cliche lines 101

      and I bet we’ll hear these too……….

      “Don’t you die on me!!”

      “Is that all you’ve got?”

      “It’s quiet……a little TOO quiet!”

      “Not on my watch!”

      “Let’s do this!”

      “We got company.”

  • SP1234

Adam, wasn’t Public Enemies 1930s? So how would that fit into the 40s?

  • Matty

And I really doubt many LAPD detective squads in 1949 had a black and a latino officer assigned. Horribly segregated organization.

  • Strong Enough

why does Ryan Gosling sound like Mickey mouse?

  • mattinacan

looks fantastic, Gosling looks and sounds perfect, another winner for Sean Penn – can’t wait for this

  • mattinacan

Gosling looks and sounds perfect for this, Sean Penn has an awesome role, looks like a big winner – can’t wait.

  • DamnBASTERD

    So it’s The Untouchables… again.

  • mattinacan

looks epic, Gosling and Penn look and sound perfect, can’t wait

  • Lo Sa

Some of the lines are just cheeseeey. Brolin, Nolte and Penn look badass, Gosling not so much (He was hired for the sex scene I guess) In all it comes across as just trying a bit too hard! Not really sold on this one.

    • Jazzy Jace

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight, because you’ve seen the movie already to make that informed opinion? Shut up.

  • terry

    OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH*T!

Now thes is my kind of movie!
And the cinematography looks freaking awesome.
And the way that shot gun was tossed to Gossling. Daaayum!

  • Shaun

DAYUM! THIS IS ONE TRUE ALL STAR CAST MODAFUCKAS!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t fricking wait to hear when it comes out exactly, hopefully the studios won’t push this back to 2013, like happened to most of movies this year.

P.S. Amazing how much comments a no comic book-related movie can get. Damn!

sorry but it just looks a bit boring.

  • JennyL

Based on this trailer, I have no interest to see this movie… This seems cartoonish for some odd reason. I can’t believe that I’m prefering a Shia Labeouf movie over a Ryan Gosling one but in this case, Lawless looks better.

  • Alex–

Eh, thought it would be cooler (and it actually is exactly what I thought it was going to be), waste a good cast if you ask me. And that Jay Z song is inappropriate I don’t think Jay Z, guy was never gangsta enough for me.

Gosling is fine, if repeating his voice a bit from Drive. But I wish Sean Penn wasn’t wearing a prosthetic nose. I know Cohen was a real person but Sean Penn just looks like someone from LA Noire right now. Let him keep his face so he can act better…?

  • Evan

Lawless looks like the authentic, powerful Oscar contender. Gangster Squad looks choreographed and over stylized, bit looks like a lot of fun, especially after seeing Penn.

    Both can be good :)

    Looks awesome,

Sean Penn goes crazy villain, whats not to like

  • DDGmike

LA Confidential meets Untouchables? Why is Sean Penn wearing make up that makes him look like Robert DeNeiro’s double? And why is gangsta rap the backdrop for a movie that takes place in 1949? I’m interested, but God, the marketing it absurd.

  • AlexHeyNa

If Sean Penn wasn’t in this, I’d probably have little to no interest. But his part looks incredible.
