Garrett Hedlund in Talks to Star in AKIRA

     November 3, 2011

A few weeks ago, we reported that Warner Bros. may be trying to turn Jaume Collett-Serra‘s Akira remake into a cure for insomnia by making TRON: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund the frontrunner for the lead role.  Now it looks like he’ll have it because according to Variety [and first reported by Twitch] Hedlund is in talks with WB to play Kaneda.  Warner Bros. couldn’t make an offer to Hedlund until the budget was in place and I’m assuming the offer was, “You starred in TRON: Legacy and you’re getting a second chance at a major sci-fi blockbuster.  You’re welcome.”  If you think I’m being overly harsh on Hedlund, please direct me to the movie where he gave a magnetic and captivating performance.

But maybe he hasn’t been given the chance.  Maybe films like Georgia Rule and Country Strong haven’t provided Hedlund with the chance to shine.  However, he’s playing Dean Moriarty in the adaptation of On the Road, and that’s a damn fine character so we’ll see how he does.  If you’re unfamiliar with Akira, hit the jump for a synopsis of the original manga.

Here’s a synopsis for the manga Akira (it’s worth noting that the movie will change the setting from neo-Toyko to neo-Manhattan):

Akira is set in the post-apocalypse Neo-Tokyo of 2019, a vast metropolis built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by an apocalyptic blast of unknown power that triggered World War III. The lives of two streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when dormant paranormal abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, who becomes a target for a shadowy government operation, a group who will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like that which leveled Tokyo. And at the core of their motivation is a raw, all-consuming fear: a fear of someone — or something — of unthinkably monstrous power known only as… Akira. And Akira is about to rise! [Amazon]

Totally agree, Hedlund is a block of wood.

    • fanny

He is a success. You? Haha…sorry.

      • Liam_H

Please, not the Kevin Smith argument.

  • fanny

Matt who? You are a nobody. And your geek followers are as anonymous are you are obviously. Garrett’s career is going very well while yours? LOL DEAL WITH IT NERDS.

  • zootcatchy

actually he was totally awesome in ‘Dath Sentence’ and ‘Friday Night Lights’. watch those then talk.

    • zootcatchy

and he did great in Tron Legacy, wouldn’t you be stoned if one day you got into cyber world you’ve never believed existed?

  • anita

Go to the Rotten Tomatoes and read the reviews he got for Country Strong. The movie was bashed but he was called ‘magnetic’ and ‘charismatic’ by many critics, REAL critics, which is not your case obviously. And after On the Road I guess your career will be definitely OVER.

  • Andrew

Go and watch Death Sentence. He’s easy outmagneticed Kevin Bakon in that one.

    • fanny

That’s just YOUR opinion, not the truth whatsoever. Anyway, after On the Road you nerds are going to be REALLY ashamed so whatever…

      • zootcatchy

yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
oh sorry, randomly quoted Jeff Bridges who said Hedlund did an amazing job and goin’ to go far.
so what’s your opinion? oh, doesn’t matter, your opinion is nothing to Jeff’s.

  • Reijanrobo

Ya know, I would not be half pissed-off if he was cast . this movie is getting made whether we like it or not so we have to deal with it.

  • T

I’ve only seen him in TRON and I’d say you are being overly harsh when everyone of his lines was written as a one liner/overtly obvious expositional comment that treated the audience like idiots. Not exactly gold material.

In regards Akira being reset to America, absolute sacrilege.

  • jimmy

    matt ya troll

If you want to see a good movie with Hedlund go and watch “Friday Night Lights”. His performance in this movie is also very good.
If you want to be convinced that he’s a fine actor go and watch “Death Sentence” and “Four Brothers” within a short time.
Both movies are revenge movies but the character he plays are very different. Both are not exactly Oscar material (though Four Brothers is one of my favourite guilty pleasure movies) but you might recognize that he’s a very versatile actor. To see what kind of actor Garrett Hedlund is you have to focus on all of his characters instead of searching for one outstanding performance…or you wait for OTR. ;-)

I admire him for vanishing behind his roles though this may not be good for his career. I’ve read so often that people didn’t realize they had seen him in another movie before because he looked, talked and walked in such a different way.

Well but actually I really hope he won’t take this role. I think this movie is doomed to become as awful as “The last Airbender”.

Sorry for my crappy English. English is just my second language.

    • Cartouche

Yeah he was tremendours in ERAGON!! LOL

I dont mind him at all but he is a wooden actor. Right now in his career he is one dimensional.

  • Bryce Forestieri

Goldberg lacks credibility. Hedlund is very nice to look at and has been good/decent in minor roles, but he was a fucking bore in Tron.

    • purplefair

Sam Flynn, the lame director and the script was a bore. BTW why don’t you attack Jeff Bridges too? He was horrible in it too but of course, you have no guts right? duh…

  • wacko3205

I hate it for you…but Hedlund was A-EFFIN-MAZING in Country Strong & for what TRON was…he did perfectly fine in it. Hedlund deserves a hell of a lot more respect than he’s given here.

  • Leoh

Hedlund is a dreadful actor. Please don’t hire him, he gonna ruin the movie how he did in Tron and Country song.

    • purplefair

I think your have no brain LOL

  • Plastic Man

    Hey Matt

While I agree with you about Hedlund’s acting ability (at least, so far) I think you’d come across a lot more convincing and persuasive if you dropped the internet snarkiness that you seem to love bathing all of your posts in. I’m not sure you realize just how off-putting this is, and how contemptible it makes trying to rationalize with you sometimes, even when we agree with you.

Most internet blogs and websites get off on being internet snarky, but to 99% of the real world it just comes off as pathetic and childish. Not saying you should change your opinion, but your items are so covered in it that it makes reading your items a challenge. You may have those who ‘agree’ with you, but that’s irreverent; you’d be a lot better at what you do if you held back more and insulted things less.

  • Rukia

I’d take Hedlund over Channing Tatum in a second. A lousy white actor is going to get the part. They could have done worse.

  • Zambookie

His acting was very good in Death Sentence

  • shutupJEWberg

the holocaust never happened, matt goldberg was just abomination that stemmed from it.

  • justin

matt goldberg really puts me off this website, i cant stand him.

and to answer his question: death sentence

  • Jay

this guy is horrible…why does he get these great roles.

    • purplefair

      I think you’re dumb LOL

  • snapperhead

    Wow, Goldberg. Not bad.
This is basically a non-story. We all knew Hedlund was being considered. And yet somehow you managed to inspire all these comments.
    You really are a master-baiter.

  • purplefair

Garrett Hedlund is A STAR. He’s making this movie, On the Road and Tron 3. Matt WHO? and all the 12 years old virgin nerds with inferiority complex issues are COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT IN THE REAL WORLD. Warner, Disney, Universal, all of those big studios want him. You nerds? Um, not even your mom & dad. Really pathetic. Matt is just trying desperately to be relevant through Garrett. What a loser.

Why do people take bashing Hedlund so… personally? Never before have I seen so many people offended by someone calling someone a bad actor. I’m sensing a lot of tension.

*Truth be told, I’ve only seen Tron: Legacy, and I thought everyone in it was bad. Yes, even Bridges (though head and shoulders above everyone else).

  • wxy

He was fantastic in Country Strong. The comment was uncalled for -.-
