Gary Oldman image Red Riding Hood slice

Yesterday I got to speak with Gary Oldman for his new movie Red Riding Hood.  While I’ll have the full interview online very soon, I was able to get updates on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and director Tomas Alfredson’s (Let The Right One In) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

For those hoping that The Dark Knight Rises will be as awesome as The Dark Knight, Oldman (who plays Commissioner Gordon) told me that he’s spoken to Nolan about the story and calls it “fantastic.”  He then said, “You think you can’t top The Dark Knight and I think he may have.”

Regarding Alfredson’s follow up to Let The Right One In, Oldman said it’s probably the greatest role he’s ever played.  Which after looking at his amazing resume, is saying something.  The Cold War thriller centers on semi-retired agent George Smiley (Oldman) who is pulled out of semi-retirement to ferret out a Soviet mole within MI6.  The film has an impressive cast that also includes Oscar-winner Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, John Hurt and Toby Jones.  Hit the jump to watch the interview:

Note: This interview was done for our partners at Omelete.  A huge thank you to our partners in Brazil!

I’m amused by the way that interviewer offered a meaningless “totally” after Oldman said, “directed by Thomas Alfredson.” I think his credit on the film should be ‘Totally Directed by Thomas Alfredson’

    • J

Steve is a great fan of the word “totally.” It’s better than going “Uh-huh” and “mhm” when someone is talking, though. See that in interviews all the time. Just a way of letting someone know you’re listening, it’s understandable.

    It’s hipster Gary Oldman!

  • Alex

With Michael Caine, Wally Pfister, and now Gary Oldman all saying Chris has topped The Dark Knight, the movie is going to become over-hyped. I have all the faith in the world in Chris Nolan, but I just feel you can’t top The Dark Knight too much. And people are going to be expecting much more out of this movie than possible.

But I am beyond excited for it.

    • colin

calm down, its all in your head

    • asmo

Remember how hyped The Dark Knight was? I would say that lived up to expectations.

I think the reason why Dark Knight is considered so highly is because all of the joker scenes are pure gold. If you take flaws into consideration; Maggie Gyllenhaal’s acting/casting, the rushed handeling of two face, the over length of the film, a weaker peformance from Bale than Batman Begins, plus the stupid Batman voice and the fact that Bruce Wayne gets lost in the shuffle making Dark Knight less a story about wayne/batman and more an ensemble (villain show off) piece (which was a flaw of the burton and shumacher films) because the psyche of batman is one of the things that makes him such a classic super hero. So you can’t really top ledger’s joker but there’s a fair amount of room for improvement in a lot of other areas.

    • J

and the boat scenes were terrible. You know they’re going to live, and the whole prisoner doing a good deed thing? Very cheesy. Why would I wanna spend time with these random people, when all the big shit is going down?

    • junierizzle

No. The movie isn’t just about the JOKER. The Joker is just one of the great elements. I have to say your critiques feel like nitpicking. You can nitpick any movie.
That’s like saying “THE GODFATHER is overrated. I hated how Brando talked. I think the wedding scene was way too long.”

      • Matt

I can’t believe someone said saying TDK is overrated is like saying The Godfather is overrated. Funniest thing I’ve ever heard.

        kids today.

    • your mom

Finally, someone who feels exactly like I do about TDK. Ledger’s performance s one of acting’s greatest. But the rest of the film could have been so much better. At minimum, it needed another 30 min edited out of the film for flow.

  • BradZuhl

The only scenes in Dark Knight that are worth watching are the ones with Heath Ledger. The rest of the movie is boring as all hell.

  • BruceTenmile

Yeah, I’ve always liked Begins more, and as with Inception, the uber-love for it has kind of left me disliking it more than the film deserves. It’s good, just not Begins could.

So over TDKR already, but the time this film comes out it will be the most overhyped thing ever and just dissapoint everyone. The fans will go gaga over it, at first, then turn on Nolan like a pack of hungry dogs.
The first film was OK, but coming off the stench of Batman and Robin how could it not be an improvement??? The second was good but way overpraised, yes the Joker was great, the rest of the film not so much, solid but with many problems.
This new film has big shoes to fill, not so much from TDK shoes, but expectations of fans who seem to think Nolan is the second coming.

    • Brandon Avery

How can you tie in the quality of a film with it being overrated or not? You can’t it doesn’t make sense. So you’re giving the overall quality of a film a lower rating b/c everyone else loved it? Come on! I hate it when people hate on something b/c it’s loved so much. The only problems TDK had making it non perfect was the batman voice and the re-casting. Other than that A GREAT FILM!

    • Ben

Christopher Nolan IS the second coming.

  • Davis Grant

Sometimes you just have to ignore other people’s opinions, some of the comments are nitpicking certain aspects of the film. Granted I also agree that Bale’s Batman voice was a tad weird and corny, when he started talking in the Vault scene people started laughing but it wasn’t God awful I got adjusted to it. When people say something is overrated I stop listening and reading, their idea of overrated is “oh this has too much praise, I don’t like it that much so it’s overrated,” and the word loses substance like that but whatever.

Is it really saying anything to say Nolan “may have” topped himself? No. Sounds more like the first indication he has not.

The naysayers cry that TDK is somehow broken. The fanboys cry that its better than “The Godfather”. Both notions are gross overstatements. Its become a vulgar sport for those who love to have their rush opinions heard, even if they lack any real insight.

Truth is they (Nolan’s films) are smartly written, wonderfully shot and directed, but none of that would stand without its cast. Though when it comes to his female stars his choices can tilt toward the dubious.

I for one am looking forward to the conclusion of Nolan’s Batman Trilogy, in spite of all the nonsense bickering from BOTH sides. Except for its fans and despite its barking detractors, I love “The Dark Knight”.

  • ArmondWhite

The Dark Knight was better than the Godfather. The Godfather was long, boring and did a terrible job of covering the italian mafia. The stereotypes were over-the-top and borderline racist and Brando sounded like he was suffering from an ulcer during the entire damn thing. One of the most overrated movies of ALL-TIME! The Dark Knight runs circles around the Godfather 10 times in terms of acting, writing, storytelling, production, sound editing, cinematography, set design and costumes. You’re an absolute idiot if you think otherwise, and if you think GodFather is great…why don’t you go shove a vhs copy of wizard of oz up your dinosaur ass.

    • asmo

Didn’t you give TDK a negative review when it came out? Why the change of heart?
