Having recently completed his work on Western Jane Got a Gun, director Gavin O’Connor has now lined up a new project.  He’ll direct Massacre in the Himalayas, an adaptation of Freddie Wilkinson’s harrowing story about an international team of experienced mountain climbers who attempted to summit Pakistan’s K2 when they were attacked by terrorists.  (I had to double check the source to make sure this was a true-to-life tale and not a Cliffhanger remake script.)  Producers are currently searching for a screenwriter.  See what O’Connor had to say about the action-adventure project after the jump.

Variety reports gavin-oconnor-massacre-in-the-himalayasthat O’Connor will direct Massacre in the Himalayas, citing Wilkinson’s August 2013 Men’s Journal article as the film’s inspiration.  Here’s O’Connor’s take on the film:

“I love the idea of using the colossal backdrop of K2, the second highest peak on earth, to explore a man’s battle for survival against the Taliban, nature, and himself.  Our hero becomes a one-man army on a quest to avenge the deaths of his mountaineering team. His experience becomes a living nightmare, a lifetime journey, and a redefinition of the man.”

Producer Gianni Nunnari, whose Hollywood Gang Productions acquired the rights to the story, further commented on O’Connor’s deal to direct:

“‘Massacre In The Himalayas’ is a Hollywood Gang kind of movie.  It’s hard-hitting and it’s about extreme men in extreme circumstance. And Gavin is our perfect filmmaker; no one else brings his level of intensity or creates his kind of nuanced characters.”

O’Connor was also recently attached to the Tell No One remake, so we’ll see which film moves into production first.
